Microsoft introduced a new blog and Twitter account to keep partners and customers better updated with the development and progress of its next operating system. Windows President Steven Sinofsky made the first post on the “Building Windows 8” blog today, sharing some new information about Windows 8 and outlining the purpose of these new outlets to end-users, developers and information professionals.
In the post, Sinofsky briefly mentions that a pre-release version will be available “over the coming months”, likely to developers only. If the process used to roll out Windows 7 is any indication, Microsoft could also provide a Windows 8 Release Candidate to end-users before the public launch.

Well, this is certainly surprising. Sony closed out its Gamescom 2011 keynote with the startling announcement that the PlayStation 3 (presumably the standard, 160GB model) has had its price cut across the globe: It's now $249.99 in the U.S., €249.99 in Europe and ¥24,980 in Japan. According to Sony's Andrew House, this new price point is available immediately. As in, right now. This hot second.

Google announced today that it intends to purchase smartphone maker Motorola Mobility for a staggering $12.5 billion in order to obtain its mobile-related patent holdings and hardware business. According to Google, this move will accelerate the online giant's Android ecosystem, which until now was made up largely of independent partners. But it's sure to attract intense antitrust scrutiny as well.
"Together, we will create amazing user experiences that supercharge the entire Android ecosystem for the benefit of consumers, partners, and developers," Google CEO Larry Page said in a prepared statement.

It looks like the sly fox is ready to make its worldwide debut a few days early. In typical Mozilla fashion, a complete build of Firefox 6 is now unofficially available for your downloading pleasure, three days ahead of schedule.
If you're looking for a major facelift to the desktop edition, you won't find one here -- most of the new features aren't cosmetic. Perhaps most visibly, you'll find the domain name of the page you're parked on highlighted in the address bar. On the Android side, version 6 makes much bigger promises, like a "fresh visual style in Chrome Gingerbread," enhanced image scaling, and, perhaps most importantly, it's "faster and uses less memory."
