NeoSmart Technologies' ToolTipFixer

ToolTipFixer is a "patch" of sorts by NeoSmart Technologies created to permenantly fix one of Windows' most annoying & oldest bugs to date. The "hidden tooltip" bug has been around since the days of Windows 95, and became progressively worse with each Windows Upgrade – until Windows Vista, where it only appears from time to time; but it is still there nevertheless.

If your tooltips are appearing the toolbar, then ToolTipFixer is what you need.

The Bug…

They say a picture is worth a thousand words - but if the first picture is worth a thousand, then the second is priceless:

With NST ToolTipFixer installed:

http://neosmart.net/wiki/download/attachments/4915203/After.png

As you can see – no bug! Best of all, this patch (unlike some of other "fixes" floating around the web) really works, only needs to be installed/run once (whereas other patches have you running it every time you experience this problem), never gets in your way, can be safely & easily uninstalled, and best of all, it's free.

How this is different from other solutions

Other solutions floating around the net all have a couple (or more) drawbacks, here's how TTF is different:

* Set it and forget it. No need to keep running a program every time you experience this bug.
* Does one thing only – and does it right. Don't worry about unneeded bloat and useless features.
* It's free!

What Microsoft has to Say

This bug has been around since the very first day Microsoft invented "the shell" with explorer.exe, the taskbar, and the concept of a tooltip - with Windows 95. In 2006, Microsoft finally admitted that this bug exists in Windows XP... But their "solution"?

To resolve this issue, use one of the following methods:
• Log off and then log back on to the current account.
• Restart your computer.

Gee! How helpful!

Testimonials

I just wanted to say thanks for the ToolTipFixer. It is AMAZING. Something so simple (and stupid) has bugged me for years and years. It was so random with no rhyme or reason, it drove me crazy.

—J. Whitworth

Download

Currently, the latest version of ToolTipFixer is version 1.0.0, and is freely available for download (under 100kb!) at the download page.

Donate

As with all other NeoSmart projects/services, NST ToolTipFixer is 100% absolutely free. If you found this patch that Microsoft refused to bother with all these years to be useful, how about showing a token of your appreciation?

Thanks Rick. Another one that will go into my XP CD.
Im testing it now, and for me it takes 6 MB of RAM, having 2 GB and not using the Page File.

That is an annoying bug. Haven't they fixed it in SP3? It doesn't exist in Vista.

I have just installed SP3 RC1 today and seeing your post, I immediately gave it a try to "provoke" this error (simply right-click on an entry in the Start menu) and, unfortunately, I can confirm that this has NOT been fixed in SP3 (so far).
Seeing as it's RC1, I estimate the chances to have this fixed for final rather slim...

I'm not sure how it is with Vista and SP1 RC1, thpugh...

I used the website link for download and tried it. It works fine but for me it causes a dark semi transparent shadow to appear over the Windows Sidebar which will appear on alternating clicks of any gadget within the sidebar. In other words if the shadow is not present on the sidebar and I click a gadgets button then the shadow overlays the right half of the sidebar causing the button of the gadget to not function. The only way the button will function when the shadows present is if I double click it real fast.

Yea, I've tried and am using quite a few of the goodies offered here and like them very much especially that sidebar thingy. I use app blocking through firewall which blocked all but this so it was kinda easy to figure which it was. I still can't believe MS has not fixed this tooltip problem. For me it rarely happens but is always a result of when the taskbar is selected to be on top of other windows which is also a semi problem for me when using the visual tooltip app. If my mouse is over the taskbar open program the visual tooltip shows and works prefectly but if I have to use the right click context menu the visual tooltip disappears as it should leaving the context menu cut off at the bottom due to the fact that taskbar is selected to be on top of other windows.

On a side note, Rick thanks for all the cool factor AddOns. I've really enjoyed trying these out in the past week. Also what, whether it be here or elsewhere, would be the best option for achieving the Vista look for XP? I've seen some(quite a few) of your screenshots and like the look of it. Any tips/pointers would be appreciated. Thanks

Very cool, but... how are we going to slipstream it? It says '[AddOn]', but I can't find any addon for nLite... It would be awesome to integrate it :-)

What do you mean?

With nLite if you want to integrate addons you add it in with the hotfixes
