Advanced Micro Devices has begun shipping its triple-core Phenoms to OEMs, a source close to the company confirmed Thursday.
The source said that AMD is shipping the chips in volume to OEMs and PC makers, with a plan to officially launch the chips during the first quarter.

AMD said in September that the three-core Phenoms would ship in the first quarter of 2008, a deadline that has been met. AMD executives described the three-core Phenoms as an effective way to sell quad-core Phenoms that had failed to run at their rated speed. However, rices of the new chips have not been disclosed yet, and it's unclear how a slower quad-core chip will be priced versus a faster triple-core Phenom.

In September, AMD said that the triple-core parts were being referred to internally as "Toliman".
