Sweet! Official new themes give Windows 8 a global makeover

Desktop themes are so often catered for by third party tools that it’s easy to forget that Windows has built in support for theme packs. If you’re short of inspiration, don’t trust your own photography skill, or just can’t be bothered to browse Flickr for a new image, a new batch of themes direct from Microsoft could be what you need to breathe new life into your desktop.

There are five new themes in total, four of which have a travel connection. The Alaskan Landscape theme features photography from Kyle Waters -- a total of fifteen images. There is more of a seasonal feel to two New Zealand Landscapes themes.

RapidShare Fires 75% of its Staff After “Rogue Site” Revamp Bites

After its launch in 2004, RapidShare’s speedy growth saw the company become one the largest file-hosting sites on the Internet.

However, like all sites of this nature, RapidShare became popular with those looking to store copyright-infringing material. It was a relationship that would prove problematic.

RapidShare fought many legal battles with entertainment companies seeking to hold the company liable for the actions of its users, but it was a big surprise three years ago that really caused it to take stock.

Why Microsoft won't charge for Windows 'Blue' ... this time

Sometime in the coming weeks, Microsoft will tell Windows 8 users whether they will have to pay for the upgrade code-named "Blue," and if so, how much.

While Microsoft remains tight-lipped on the subject, analysts believe Microsoft won't charge for Blue, but may do so for later updates.

"I don't think that in the current Windows 8 climate they can charge for the first update, as the perception of many users will be that any changes being made or features they are adding will make Windows 8 the way it should have been when they first purchased it," said Michael Cherry of Directions on Microsoft. "I know I'd be upset if Microsoft asked me to pay for this set of changes."

Skype for Windows 8 gets a video messaging feature

Microsoft has updated its Skype application on Windows 8 with a video messaging feature, for those who can't be bothered to type.

Unsurprisingly, this new Skype feature, which is available now in Preview form, lets the handful of Windows 8 owners in the wild record a message to send to a friend. Video messages can be sent even if the recipient is unavailable, so you can give your friends a surprise when they return online.

We're not sure that we would use this feature, and we're not entirely sure who would, but it's there, for those who want it.

Microsoft is warning that as it's a Preview release, it might be a bit buggy. However, it is asking users to offer feedback so it can improve the feature.
