Microsoft has temporarily stopped offering its latest Windows 11 Patch Tuesday update to certain Dell computers after reports of serious compatibility issues.
The affected update, KB5101650, began rolling out on July 14 and introduced several quality improvements and bug fixes. While the update appears to work normally on most devices, Dell identified problems on a limited number of systems during testing, prompting Microsoft to halt the rollout for those machines.
According to Microsoft, affected Dell PCs may experience unexpected shutdowns, sluggish performance, excessive heat, battery drain, and a yellow warning icon next to the Intel Innovation Platform Framework Processor Participant driver in Device Manager. The issue doesn’t only affect the July security update. It also impacts the optional preview update KB5095093, released on June 23, on systems running Windows 11 versions 24H2 and 25H2.
Microsoft says the problem stems from an incompatibility between Intel’s driver and the new Windows USB-C Connection Manager, preventing the driver from operating correctly.
As a precaution, Microsoft has applied a compatibility block, meaning affected Dell devices will no longer be offered the July update until a fix is available. Users who installed the earlier preview update and are experiencing the listed symptoms are advised to uninstall the update and return to the previous Windows build.
The good news is that Microsoft acted quickly, preventing the July Patch Tuesday update from reaching affected Dell systems. However, the optional June preview update remained available before the issue was discovered, meaning some users may already have encountered the problem. Microsoft and Dell are working on a permanent fix, but no release date has been announced. Until then, affected users should avoid reinstalling the update if their system has already been impacted.
