However, the latest information from Microsoft’s Windows 11 blog reveals a different approach – the next version will be named Windows 11 24H2. This decision is highlighted in a recent build update where the OS version number changes, showing that Windows 11, version 24H2, will be released as this year’s annual feature update. Microsoft confirms its commitment to a yearly feature update schedule, typically arriving in the fall, with 24H2 likely expected around September.
Despite the low-key announcement, Microsoft is expected to emphasize improved artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities with this update, by continuing the trend of the “AI PC” era. The reason behind choosing Windows 11 24H2 over Windows 12 is speculated to be a strategic move to avoid further fragmentation of their user base.
Introducing Windows 12 could lead to the rapid obsolescence of Windows 11, causing complications for Microsoft in managing three distinct customer bases. Instead, focusing on improving Windows 11 features might encourage hesitant users to upgrade. With this year’s growing focus on AI, the free update could appeal to those utilizing new Neural Processing Units (NPUs) in modern processors, such as Intel’s Meteor Lake and AMD’s upcoming Zen 5 chips.
