Microsoft pulls Windows 11 update after installation errors

Microsoft has temporarily paused a recent Windows 11 update after users reported installation failures and error messages.

The optional update KB5079391 was released only a few days ago and included several improvements, including the ability to turn Smart Access Control (SAC) on or off without restarting the computer. However, some users quickly ran into installation problems, encountering error 0x80073712, which usually indicates that update files are missing or corrupted.

Because of the issue, Microsoft stopped the rollout shortly after release. Reports suggest the update was available for only a short time, roughly one to two hours, before it was pulled. Microsoft has confirmed that it is currently investigating the cause of the failed installations.

For now, users who tried installing the update and failed will likely have to wait for a fixed version to be released later.

This is another example of the ongoing challenges Microsoft faces with Windows updates. Optional updates, in particular, seem to cause more problems than regular security updates, and Microsoft has had to pause or fix several updates over the past few years.

The company says it is working on improving the Windows update experience overall. One planned change is giving users more control over updates, including the ability to pause them for longer periods.

Still, repeated update issues have made many users cautious about installing optional updates immediately.
