Microsoft stops supporting IE for Microsoft 365 services

Microsoft has today confirmed that its Microsoft 365 applications and services will no longer support the Internet Explorer 11 browser.

This does not mean that Microsoft 365 services will instantly stop working with IE11, but users may experience the degraded performance as Microsoft plans to phase out the end of support in the coming weeks or even months. The company will also use banners to alert its customers about upcoming changes like application or service disconnections or redirections.

Initial degraded experiences have started on August 17, 2021, and include the following:

Outlook Web App: Users logging in with AAD accounts will have the full experience but will not receive new features. Users who are logging in with Microsoft Accounts (MSA) will now be redirected to the Outlook Web App Light experience.

SharePoint’s Open with Explorer and View in File Explorer in IE11 features:

These features only exist in IE11 and even though some customers might still use them, they will remain in maintenance mode without further development. Microsoft highly recommends switching to Microsoft Edge and OneDrive Sync for a better user experience.

So, in order to continue using Microsoft 365 applications and services without degradations, Microsoft recommends using Microsoft Edge or other supporter browsers. Even though Microsoft 365 has stopped support for the IE11 browser, the IE11 desktop application will still remain supported until June 15, 2022.
