Microsoft has revealed more information on the rollout procedure for stable releases of its Edge browser. Starting with version 83, the company will start using so-called “progressive rollouts”, which means that major updates are planned to be deployed gradually during a period of several days.
The reason for this change lies in the fact that Microsoft has to monitor the health of deployed Edge updates in order to limit possible issues that can be caused by new updates.
Here’s how it will work. Each installation of Microsoft Edge will be assigned an upgrade value. Once the rollout starts incrementally, users will see this update only when the value of their devices falls within the upgrade value range.
As the rollout continues all of Edge users will get the latest update within a few days. In order to ensure prompt protection from vulnerabilities, critical security fixes will have a faster rollout cadence than other updates.
Progressive rollouts will be automatically enabled for Windows 7, 8, 8.1, and 10 systems.
As for the Azure users, this change will affect Microsoft Intune, which will be set to use progressive rollouts, while WSUS users will not be affected by this change.
