Notepad is getting a bigger upgrade

Microsoft is continuing to evolve Notepad on Windows 11, and the next update could bring a surprising addition: support for inserting and viewing images.

The feature is still in testing, but early builds and Windows Insider reports show a new image button appearing in the Notepad toolbar, even if it’s not fully working yet. If rolled out, this would mark a big shift for an app that’s traditionally been focused on plain text only.

This change is part of a broader push to modernize Notepad. Recent updates have already introduced tabs, improved Markdown support, and even AI-powered features through Copilot. Microsoft’s goal is to turn Notepad into a more flexible, everyday tool rather than just a basic editor. The move also comes after the removal of WordPad, which used to handle richer content like images and formatted text. In a way, Notepad is now being asked to fill that gap.

For users who prefer the old, minimal experience, there’s some good news as Microsoft is expected to allow these newer features to be turned off in settings. Still, not everyone is happy with the direction. Some users and security experts worry that adding more complexity increases the risk of bugs and vulnerabilities. That concern isn’t purely theoretical either.

Recently, researchers uncovered a serious zero-day flaw tied to Notepad’s newer features. The issue, now fixed, could have allowed attackers to run malicious code through specially crafted Markdown files. Critics say this highlights a bigger question. Should Notepad stay simple and reliable, or continue evolving into something more powerful, but potentially more risky?
