Windows 10 extended security updates will require a Microsoft account

<p>Microsoft has confirmed that anyone enrolling a Windows 10 PC in the Extended Security Updates &lpar;ESU&rpar; program&comma; even if they pay the &dollar;30 fee&comma; must have a Microsoft Account&period; This comes as a surprise&comma; as it was previously believed that only the free ESU option required account sign-in&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p><img class&equals;"alignnone size-full wp-image-2659" src&equals;"https&colon;&sol;&sol;www&period;wincert&period;net&sol;wp-content&sol;uploads&sol;2018&sol;07&sol;windows&lowbar;10&lowbar;wall&period;jpg" alt&equals;"" width&equals;"640" height&equals;"400" &sol;><&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>One &dollar;30 ESU license covers up to 10 devices linked to the same Microsoft Account&period; So&comma; while an account is now mandatory&comma; you won’t need to pay &dollar;30 for each PC&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>There are three ways to enroll in the ESU program&colon;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<ul>&NewLine;<li>Pay a one-time &dollar;30 fee<&sol;li>&NewLine;<li>Redeem 1&comma;000 Microsoft Reward points<&sol;li>&NewLine;<li>Get it free by syncing your PC settings to OneDrive<&sol;li>&NewLine;<&sol;ul>&NewLine;<p>The ESU program ensures continued security updates until October 13&comma; 2026&comma; beyond Windows 10’s end of support on October 14&comma; 2025&period; Enrollment opened in July 2025 and is gradually rolling out&period; If you don’t see the option yet&comma; check back later&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>To enroll&comma; you&&num;8217&semi;ll have to do the following&colon;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>Go to <strong>Settings<&sol;strong> &vert; <strong>Update &amp&semi; Security<&sol;strong> &vert; <strong>Windows Update<&sol;strong><&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>Click <strong>Enroll now<&sol;strong> &lpar;if available&rpar;<br &sol;>&NewLine;Sign in with your Microsoft Account and choose your enrollment option&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>Although many users prefer local accounts&comma; Microsoft is tying ESU licenses to accounts to facilitate multi-device activation management&period; While this move may frustrate some&comma; it offers better value for households or small businesses with several Windows 10 machines&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;
