Windows 11’s latest update may be causing trouble for some SSDs, though reports are still scattered and far from conclusive. The potential problem came to light via Wccftech, which highlighted a post from a Japanese Windows 11 user on X (Necoru_cat) describing disappearing drives after installing the August update, KB5063878.
According to the report, affected SSDs vanish entirely from Windows during heavy write operations like large game installs or big patches. In one case, a 50GB write operation for a Cyberpunk 2077 patch reportedly triggered the issue. The culprit might be the drive cache, and early tests suggest SSDs with Phison NAND controllers could be more vulnerable.
If the glitch occurs, the affected drive is no longer recognized, its partition disappears, and there’s a risk of file corruption. While alarming, this comes from limited reports, so caution is advised before concluding.
Other users on Reddit have reported similar problems, including one involving an Adata SP580 SSD. A tentative list of potentially affected drives includes models like Corsair Force MP600, Kioxia Exceria Plus G4, Fikwot FN955, SanDisk Extreme Pro M.2 3D, and Adata SP580. Some Windows users suggest that even certain hard drives may show similar symptoms, though the majority of reports point to SSDs.
While this appears to be a niche issue for now, it’s worth being careful. Users running the latest Windows 11 update may want to hold off on large installations or patches until more information or an official response from Microsoft becomes available. Some theories propose that the update itself isn’t directly at fault, but that heavy write activity could trigger latent SSD bugs, though it’s unclear why multiple SSD types, or even some hard drives, might be affected.
