Microsoft has officially released Windows 11 version 26H2, its latest annual feature update. While the name suggests a major new release, the update is more of a consolidation point than a completely new version of Windows.
Version 26H2 is built on the same underlying platform as Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2. Rather than introducing a completely fresh set of features, it brings together the improvements Microsoft has been rolling out through monthly updates over the past year.
That means users who have been missing some of the newer Windows 11 changes, such as the redesigned Start menu or recent File Explorer improvements, should get them after moving to 26H2.
Microsoft is distributing 26H2 as an enablement package, meaning much of the necessary code is already sitting on compatible PCs. The actual upgrade should therefore be relatively small and quick to install compared with a traditional Windows feature update.
The release also starts a new support period. Home and Pro editions receive 24 months of support, while commercial editions get 36 months. Microsoft is rolling the update out gradually, but impatient users can potentially get it earlier by enabling “Get the latest Windows updates when they’re available” under Windows Update settings.
There is one important exception. PCs running Windows 11 26H1 cannot currently upgrade to 26H2. Despite the newer numbering, 26H1 is based on a newer Windows platform, so Microsoft does not currently provide a direct upgrade path between the two. For most Windows 11 users, then, 26H2 isn’t about a dramatic visual transformation. It’s Microsoft’s way of packaging a year’s worth of changes into a new version, and extending the support clock at the same time.
