I manage to slim down XP(installed with sp3 was 350MB) a lot and it was great, 0% processor unless I wanted him to work something etc...it was made for music, live performance. I waited a lot for something similar to come out that is reliable and that has components removal and that can set services as I wanted. I did all that with W7T(removed x64 WIM, and components(almost all) from x86 and do services and winsxs) but when I install it in VMWARE I have a lot of these services running, wnsxs is there and its LARGE 3,5GB and my install ISO is 2,3 GB (install wim is 1,92 GB , after W7T finish modification with it). So how can I make windows without almost everything, need …

  7. Windows 7 still uses the 32 bit version of 'Windows Media Player' even though you run a x64 build of Windows 7, there is however a way to change this and there are som advantages by doing so, among others you will be able to use your 64 bit video codecs instead of 32 bit, so you will be able to use your 64 processor. By switching to WMP x64, users just need to install one instance of codecs (just x64 version) to playback various media files in WMC and WMP. Follow the tutorial by clicking read more. This is how you do! Run Registry Editor (RegEdit). Take ownership and grant full control of registry keys listed below to unlock the registry keys: HKLM\Software\CLASSES\CLSID\{…

  8. 1. Install Windows 7 to VHD from DVD ----------------------------------------------------- With Windows 7, you now have the option to boot the OS from a VHD, a virtual disk file, instead of a partition. This way, you don't have to reconfigure your hard drive partitions. Limitations: Hibernate is not supported. Here are the simplified instructions: 1) Start Windows 7 installation from DVD. 2) Press Shift+F10 to start the command prompt. 3) Start diskpart. 4) Use the "create vdisk file=D:\Win7.vhd maximum=xxxxx" to create a virtual hard disk. Choose your drive and filename accordingly. xxxxx is in MB. 5) Type "select vdisk file=D:\Win7.vhd". 6) Type "attach vdisk". You wil…

  12. Is there any documentation about the changes made to the Windows registry between Windows XP and Windows Vista/7? I've googled for an hour already. All I can find is that there aren't many changes... but I would still like to know what they are. My main concern is being able to use xp reg files I have to auto-install programs without using an installer (and I'd like to use those reg files in 7)

According to Solar's hotfix information, Windows6.1-KB2533552-x64 is not integratable with the install source. If that is the case, how does one get that update automatically on the install without going to Windows updates? I only ask this because I am a perfectionist. I have every other update applicable to a x64 source integrated and when checking the install, the above update (KB2533552) is still needed. So, who can help me with this one? Edit: After further investigation, this is not a problem with the KB2533552 update as previously mentioned with the old topic title ("How to integrate KB2533552?"). It appears to be an integration problem. Skip down a few posts to…

  17. I have a new one for those of you who have more experience with the Windows 7 setup than I do. For the most part, Windows 7 gets setup. During the stage where "Windows if finalizing your settings", the install just stops and does nothing at that point. Everything is still operational, but it does not go past that screen. I am able to call up a command prompt and get the task manager running, and it appears that the setup is stuck on a command prompt that is not doing anything. It could be related to some of the addons I use, but no one else has reported problems with those addons at this time. If I killed that defunct command prompt, the setup continues on, but the …

As I was told that the files written on a fast SSD would be best off if there was not alot changes to the disk or partition. I'm lucky to have a vertex3 ssd, so I want to be as kind to the SSD as possible. Few questions: 1) would be obviously smart to have the user files on a seperate partition, but what about the pagefile? and other system files? 2) would it be best to make a sysprep image and then once in a while just do a reinstall of the OS or would it be better to make an image backup with software like TrueImage or is there just a difference in preference? 3) any other advice about the disk structure of the OS regarding to SSD storage? Thanks all! :giveheart:

  20. The changes to the size, view, icon or position of a folder are lost on a computer that is running Windows XP, Windows Vista, or Windows 7. For example, you may experience one or more of the following issues: Microsoft Windows does not remember the View settings for a folder when you reopen the folder. Note The View settings include Thumbnails, Tiles, Icons, List, Details, and so on. Windows does not remember the size or the position of a folder window when you reopen the folder. An incorrect thumbnail image is displayed for a folder. The thumbnail image does not appear for a folder. Note This issue may occur in Windows XP or in Windows Vista even if you select the Rememb…

  21. Developers can do this why can't end users. There are endless queries on the Internet about how to set the default email client to something other than Outlook or Windows Live. Got me to thinking there must be some app or instruction on how to manually place an entry in the Windows 7 Set Default Programs utility, since software developers can do it for apps like Skype, WinRar, PotPlayer, etc. If anybody has run across such a tool, let the community here know. Tried this http://defaultprogramseditor.com/ one; it doesn't make brand new entries to the default programs list; so the search continues....

  22. http://www.thelongclimb.com/2011/05/06/the-windows-7-power-users-guide-ebook-is-now-free/ It is just a basic "how to install & run Win7" book, nothing amazing. A bit annoying to use also; there is now index & the TOC chapters aren't linked. But since it is free, & many here are sys admins for someone else, this may be useful to hand off to Win7 newbies.I did learn about the new ADVANCED SEARCH QUERY SYNTAX though! (page 149)

  23. First, we'll discuss the 4GB RAM limit on x86 systems. The 4GB limit is hardware-based (well, almost - I'll explain the workaround later that allows up to 128GB) - the x86 architecture can really only address memory addresses at 2^32, or 4,294,967,296 (4,294,967,296/1024x1024=4096, or 4GB). So, no executable code can be at any address higher than the 4GB "boundary". However, there were 2 workarounds (hacks) that Intel put in place awhile ago to try and extend the life of the 32bit platform until it could get it's 64bit Itanium platform mainstream, and these were PAE and PSE (read here for more on why Microsoft chose to implement PAE rather than PSE). The hack you speak of…
