I am a self-taught person. From the time I got my first computer to even now.

Here's a study you can try.

Re-enable all of your services to the proper defaults. Run a ProcessIdleTasks* to rebuild your prefetch (or wait for that happen automatically every three days) and you'll be surprised how your system will perform better with everything as factory defaults.

I'm speaking from experience, I've tried it with tweaks, and then without. The defaults really are the optimal settings. This is, after all, friendly advice to help those who are not as educated in the field of computers.

Edit: Here's the exact command to enter via Run

Rundll32.exe advapi32.dll,ProcessIdleTasks

When called from the command line, the ProcessIdleTasks work is done in the background asynchronously. It can take 10 to 15 minutes for idle tasks to complete. Task Manager will report processes running, and the disk will likely be active during this time.

my system runs a lot better now, than it does on defaults. i know this. iv reloaded windows MANY times on it, always windows XP sp2 as well.

the reason i was reloading so much, is i would install a piece of software, and it would screw up my system, and no system backup tool will fix it properly. theres always something that gets left behind, so rather than waste my time to fix it, i just wipe it and start fresh.

so thats why i know my system runs better now than it did before.

Ok, if you're not willing to try it. Shame too, it's so easy. Revert services to defaults, set pagefile to System Managed, ensure prefetch is set to boot and application launch.

you dont seem to be getting the picture. i have installed windows on this computer countless times (even before tweaking my system) with an OEM dell version of xp pro sp2 and a copy of xp home retail and they run OK but not good (like it does now)

i have installed XP, ran it for a while (about 2 or 3 weeks) without tweaking it because that was when i didnt tweak/no how to. and it ran alright, but now that i am tweaking it, its running even better.

stop saying its my loss, when in reality its my gain. jesus christ im getting irritated with people lately.

There's your issue. OEM Dell version. So it's loaded down with crap. Uninstall it after you do a restore and then see what Windows XP Pro with SP2 is really supposed to be like.

XP Home doesn't have quite the extensive features that XP Pro has. Dell OEM alone is bad enough, they clog down the system with needless junk.

I'm offering to help you with this experiment; but you need to be open and accepting to change and listen to reason.

omfg, its a installation of XP not a restore CD. its an actuall install disc, just like an XP pro retail cd. theres no other stuff after install other than a dell folder on the root of the drive with 50kb or so of stuff.

for your info, iv even had a copy of XP pro retail on this. im right, your wrong leave me the hell alone.

nLite shouldn't touch services either, it's just promoting a crippled Windows install.

ill tell you why im hostile. i gotta deal with idiots like you all ****ing day at school, then i come home and i gotta deal with them online. its ****ing ridiculous as far as im ****in concerned. i tell you that i have tried something you say to try, and then you keep saying it even though i already said so (i didnt try EXACTLY what you said to do, but its close enough that it wont make a difference to an intelligent person) and you keep saying that its my loss or w/e the **** it was.

i get irritated very easily as i have a very short fuse. god help the first customer that pisses me off at work too the point i explode. the only way that'll happen though, is if he calls me an idiot. meanwhile, ill be the one fixing his ****in air conditioner :grrr:

no wonder my parents say im gonna have a coronary by the time im 20 :ranting:

Same here.Everything unneeded is either stopped, deleted and or tweaked.

Works much better that way and I can show myself by restoring from a ghost image to before and after tweaking.

Same with all my XP Pro and Vista Ultimate installs including a few virtual machines as test beds.

Even Blackviper's guide doesn't go far enough for me as I don't even have a "Workstation" service showing as I uninstall all my network properties except for TCP/IP.

We are all different and if it works for you then do it.

I would just caution everyone not to disable the task scheduler in Vista, as a WHOLE bunch of system-level services have hidden tasks there that will no longer function properly, like bluetooth, media center, defrag, hotstart and multimon config (for laptop users who use presentation monitors like projectors), reliability monitor, certain sideshow functions for those with laptops or PCs with sideshow devices, WDI, WER, and the wired/wireless info collectors, to name a few .

How to remove recycle bin from your desktop
Open Regedit by going to START - RUN and type Regedit and hit enter. Then you should navigate to following entry in registry
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\
Desktop\NameSpace\{645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E} and delete it. This action should remove recycle bin from your desktop.

I removed it longtime ago, but I didn't delete the entry, I just rename it (add BAK)

BAK{645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}
