One of our Windows 10 clients wasn’t able to install downloaded Windows updates from the WSUS server.

No matter if a user or admin logs on to the machine the Windows Update – Install now button is always grayed out. Although this client is receiving updates from the WSUS server, users should be able to manually install downloaded updates.

In order to install updates, I had to delete the registry key that was defined through Group Policy.

Open Registry editor and navigate to the following key:

Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Windows Update\AU

Delete the contents of the AU key from the right pane.

After a couple of minutes, you should see updates started installing. Once the system is restarted, the AU key will be recreated from the Group Policy.
