  2. Vision and Purpose The Wallpaper Manager is a Proof of Concept WPF application I built using Expression Blend and Visual Studio .NET 2008 (Codename Orcas). The application exists as a Windows Presentation Foundation XAML form application that is designed to provide users with the ability to control their desktop wallpaper by cascading over specified directories and allowing users to quickly browse, change and establish timed transitions between wallpaper. Here are some usage notes and information below. Also note that you will be prompted to install the .NET framework Beta 3.5. There is a feature of the .NET Framework 3.5 beta that will allow it to get updates as newer and finally RTM bits are released. User Interface Wallpaper Manager Main Form The main form is where users configure settings, navigate image collections, specify directories, start and stop the timer, save settings and exit the applicationg Wallpaper Manager Mini Wallpaper Manager Mini is a task tray icon activated mini-browser that allows for the navigation through the image collection, setting of selected wallpaper and the ability to restore the main Wallpaper Manager window Features Browse a directory of images (including subdirectories if optioned by the user) for wallpaper Users can browse through a directory and its subdirectories for images with Wallpaper Manager and set the desktop wallpaper to a specific image Users can specify whether or not to cascade into subdirectories for images Users can use the image navigation buttons to navigate forward and backward through discovered images and set the image as the desktop background Time desktop wallpaper transitions Users can specify a directory (including subdirectories) for source images that will be rotated through on a specified frequency Once the specified rotation frequency has passed, Wallpaper Manager will set the desktop background to the next sequential image If there are no more sequential images, Wallpaper Manager will loop through the image collection and go back to the first image in the specified directory (at its highest level if subdirectories are included) Event Notifications Wallpaper Manager will allow users to receive Balloon Tip feedback of specific events under the following circumstances (if so optioned on the main form) Wallpaper Image Changes Minimize to Tray on Close Saving of Settings Start and Stop of Wallpaper Timer Wallpaper Manager Mini Wallpaper Manager (if set to minimize to the tray on close) will provide users with a mini-browser interface so that users can quickly rotate through a collection of images and set wallpaper By clicking on the task tray icon for Wallpaper Manager, the mini-browser will render the next wallpaper to be rendered in the collection as well as image navigation buttons Users can set the desired wallpaper from the mini-browser or choose to restore to the larger main form to adjust timer settings and other application settings AutoResume Timer Wallpaper Manager can be set to AutoResume wallpaper time settings on restart, including picking up with the last set wallpaper in the collection(if it still exists) When Wallpaper Manager is set to AutoResume, it will open minimized to the task tray and then open the mini-browser as well as message the user that the timer has started according to the established rotation frequency Known Issues UNC Paths appear to upset the application. I'm looking into this If you need to upgrade the application, after install, make sure that the WallpaperSettings settings XML file is completely removed or you might experience some strange behavior This is only an issue if the version of Wallpaper Manager changes and not so much on a reinstall of the same version There have been some instances where I experienced the timer settings not working correctly and that the timer function has been escalated. I'm looking into this In order for timer changes to take place, Save Settings first Download

  9. Introduction This utility, which has the most comprehensive knowledge of auto-starting locations of any startup monitor, shows you what programs are configured to run during system bootup or login, and shows you the entries in the order Windows processes them. These programs include ones in your startup folder, Run, RunOnce, and other Registry keys. You can configure Autoruns to show other locations, including Explorer shell extensions, toolbars, browser helper objects, Winlogon notifications, auto-start services, and much more. Autoruns goes way beyond the MSConfig utility bundled with Windows Me and XP. Autoruns' Hide Signed Microsoft Entries option helps you to zoom in on third-party auto-starting images that have been added to your system and it has support for looking at the auto-starting images configured for other accounts configured on a system. Also included in the download package is a command-line equivalent that can output in CSV format, Autorunsc. You'll probably be surprised at how many executables are launched automatically! Autoruns works on all versions of Windows including 64-bit versions. Usage: Simply run Autoruns and it shows you the currently configured auto-start applications as well as the full list of Registry and file system locations available for auto-start configuration. Autostart locations displayed by Autoruns include logon entries, Explorer add-ons, Internet Explorer add-ons including Browser Helper Objects (BHOs), Appinit DLLs, image hijacks, boot execute images, Winlogon notification DLLs, Windows Services and Winsock Layered Service Providers. Switch tabs to view autostarts from different categories. To view the properties of an executable configured to run automatically, select it and use the Properties menu item or toolbar button. If Process Explorer is running and there is an active process executing the selected executable then the Process Explorer menu item in the Entry menu will open the process properties dialog box for the process executing the selected image. Navigate to the Registry or file system location displayed or the configuration of an auto-start item by selecting the item and using the Jump menu item or toolbar button. To disable an auto-start entry uncheck its check box. To delete an auto-start configuration entry use the Delete menu item or toolbar button. Select entries in the User menu to view auto-starting images for different user accounts. More information on display options and additional information is available in the on-line help. 10. If you enjoyed the first round of Photosynth'd pictures of NASA shuttle Endeavor, you'll probably enjoy these. Taken in space by the crew of the International Space Station, the newly uploaded shots show off the underside of the space shuttle, which the Microsoft Labs team is touting as a "first-hand look at what you might see on a space-walk." Of course, when it comes to the underside of space shuttles, astronauts are usually inspecting these things for damage while hurtling hundreds of miles an hour above the Earth. You can do it from the comfort of your Web browser, assuming you're running Windows XP or Vista with a capable graphics card. Mac users are out of luck. Endeavour Tiles Prior to docking at the international space station (about 625 feet before docking), Commander Kelley of the shuttle Endeavour for STS-118 took the orbiter through a complete somersault so that the three space station residents could photograph the shuttle's belly. This procedure provides a camera view of the shuttle's often-nicked underside. These images are from that back flip process. The images revealed tile damage, about 3 inches square. It appears to have been caused by ice that broke off the fuel tank a minute after liftoff. For example, here you can see the damaged tiles in the bottom left corner of this image (a little below the right landing gear) as well as some more minor chips. Here we see the shuttle nose where the front landing gear emerges. More: HERE
  11. CL-Tools 4Win is a free suite of user interfaces for several command line utilities otherwise available only in DOS Mode. These four are used often here and I thought I would make them available to anyone that might have use for them. The suite includes GUIs for Microsofts CDImage, Cabarc, MakeCab and UPX by Markus F.X.J. Oberhumer, László Molnár and John F. Reiser. CDImage 4Win The purpose of CDIMAGE is to generate an ISO CD/DVD image from the contents of a folder on the hard drive. There are options which can control various ISO image's properties like volume label, time stamp, optimize storage, boot sector file and more. If you have a CD with multiple software versions, you can author a CD that will only write the same files once, so the same physical content on the CD/DVD can appear in multiple directories while saving a substantial amount of space. It will also create bootable images of Operating Systems Windows 98, Millennium, NT, Windows 2000, Media Center Edition, XP, Windows 2003 and Vista applying the Boot Sector files and Volume label. (Boot files included) Cabarc 4Win Cabarc is a utility that creates and extracts cabinet files. The cabinet format provides a way to efficiently package multiple files. The key features of the cabinet format are that multiple files may be stored in a single cabinet and that data compression is performed across file boundaries, significantly improving the compression ratio MakeCab 4Win MakeCAB is a data compression tool that can be to compress or extract Windows Setup Cab files such as .dl_ .ex_ .sy_ .bm_ .oc_ .gi_ .wa_ .mi_, etc. Although it was originally designed for use by setup programs, it can also be used in almost any situation where lossless data compression is required. UPX 4Win UPX is a portable, extendable, high-performance executable packer for several different executable formats. It achieves an excellent compression ratio and offers *very* fast decompression.
