Microsoft’s latest browser update, Edge version 137rolled out with a suite of upgrades designed to enhance productivity and security. However, a pesky bug is stealing the spotlight, greeting many users — particularly in enterprise environments — with an “ERR_INVALID_URL” error during the First-Run Experience (FRE). This article explores the update’s highlights, the issue disrupting it, and practical solutions to get back to browsing smoothly.

What's new in Microsoft Edge 137

Bug Fixes

Among the most notable fixes is a resolution to an issue affecting users who had their sidebar visibility set to "Auto hidden." Previously, this setting caused problems when opening links in Outlook or Teams that were meant to display content within Edge’s sidepane. Microsoft says the fix should improve usability for those relying on these integrated experiences.

Feature Deprecations

Microsoft has announced the deprecation of several Edge features, which are expected to be removed by mid-to-late May 2025:

  • Image Editor

  • Image Hover Menu

  • Mini Menu

  • Video Super Resolution

  • Wallet Hub

While none of these were core components of the browser, their removal signals a shift toward simplification and a focus on more widely adopted tools.

Changes to Wallet in Edge

The Wallet feature is being phased out entirely to support a more streamlined user experience. In its place, Edge 137 introduces a new Passwords, Payment, and Personal Information section under Settings, along with a redesigned interface for managing personal data.

Web Content Filtering for EDU and SMB

Edge now includes Web Content Filtering (WCF) for educational institutions and small-to-medium businesses. This new tool allows administrators to block millions of inappropriate websites by simply selecting content categories. It updates daily and works even when devices are off-network.

Currently in public preview, WCF is positioned as a lightweight but powerful way to keep students and employees safe online.

Enhanced Copilot Integration for Business Users

Microsoft Edge users with a Microsoft 365 Copilot license can now take advantage of contextual capabilities within the Work tab of Business Chat. Features include:

  • Page summarization

  • Contextual query suggestions

  • In-browser Copilot prompts tied directly to open pages

Administrators can control access via the EdgeEntraCopilotPageContext policy. The rollout is currently in progress and may not yet be available to all users.

Mutation Events Policy Now Obsolete

In Edge 137, the MutationEventsEnabled policy — previously used to re-enable deprecated mutation events — is now obsolete. Developers are encouraged to use the MutationObserver API instead, which offers better performance and modern standards compliance.

Picture-in-Picture Player Gets Smarter

Users can now enjoy enhanced controls in Edge’s Picture-in-Picture mode, including play/pause, skip functions, and seeking via the progress bar. This makes it easier to multitask while watching videos without switching tabs.

Find on Page Meets Copilot

Edge for Business is integrating Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat into the Find on Page (Ctrl+F) function. This enhancement uses AI to help users locate relevant content faster. As with the Copilot chat integration above, this feature is rolling out gradually.

Policy Updates

Microsoft has added several new policies tailored for enterprise environments:

  • HappyEyeballsV3Enabled

  • OnBulkDataEntryEnterpriseConnector

  • OnFileAttachedEnterpriseConnector

  • OnPrintEnterpriseConnector

  • WebAuthenticationRemoteDesktopAllowedOrigins

Obsolete policies include:

  • AddressBarMicrosoftSearchInBingProviderEnabled

  • MutationEventsEnabled

Closing Words

With Edge 137, Microsoft continues to evolve its browser into a more integrated part of the Microsoft 365 ecosystem, especially for business and education users. While some features are being retired, the overall direction suggests a growing emphasis on security, simplicity, and intelligent workflows. Regular users will mostly notice the Wallet and PiP mode improvements only.

What is Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime?
Microsoft Edge WebView2 is a runtime installation used to provide web-based features in Microsoft 365 desktop apps that Microsoft began installing on Windows devices earlier this year. WebView2 uses Microsoft Edge as the rendering engine.

In Windows 11, the component is installed on the system by default. On earlier versions of Windows, it is automatically installed for users with modern versions of Microsoft Office for the specific purpose of running Office applications and the components built into the applications, built on top of web frameworks.

For PC users looking to take advantage of new or improved Office features or add-ins that depend on WebView2, they do not require any user input/action; as soon as WebView2 is available on the device, the component will be installed automatically. Regarding updates, WebView2 Runtime uses its own automatic update process, separate from the update channel used by Microsoft 365 Apps, to keep WebView2 up to date with the latest security and reliability updates.
