Mozilla has published today the final builds of the Firefox 147 open-source web browser ahead of its official unveiling on January 13th, 2026, so it’s time to take a look at the new features and improvements. Highlights of Firefox 147 include support for Freedesktop.org’s XDG Base Directory Specification, zero-copy hardware-decoded video support on AMD GPUs to improve video playback performance, support for the Safe Browsing V5 protocol, and WebGPU support for all Apple Silicon Macs. For Linux users, Firefox 147 updates the window and rendering surface sizes for GNOME‘s Mutter window and composite manager to match the actual pixel grid, which translates to sharper rendering of content on fractionally scaled displays, regardless of the actual window size. Firefox 147 also adds support for Compression Dictionaries, IETF RFC 9842, which significantly reduces the number of bytes transferred to load a page in several ways. According to Mozilla, this translates to faster loading of pages, especially for users with restricted bandwidth. Another interesting change in Firefox 147 is support for automatically opening a Picture-in-Picture player window when playing video, in a tab, if that tab is ever backgrounded. This feature was previously available in Firefox Labs, but it’s now enabled by default for everyone. One change I noticed in this release is that the Tabs settings in Preferences (Settings) have been reorganized into three categories, namely Opening, Interaction, and Closing, to make it easier for newcomers to set up their tab browsing features. Here’s what it looks like now. Also, there’s now a new Profiles section under General settings to manage Firefox profiles. This will help you keep your work and personal browsing separate, including things like passwords and bookmarks. Of course, you can also create profiles for everyone who uses your device. Now that the Picture-in-Picture auto-open on tab switch features left Firefox Labs’ experimental status, Firefox 147 introduces a new experimental feature for productivity, namely “Lists and timer on Firefox Home”, allowing you to set a timer to keep you focused, nudge you to stay on track, or remind you to recharge. Among other noteworthy changes, Firefox 147 fixes a bug that made HTTP/3 requests containing non-UTF-8 header values time out or fall back to HTTP/2, makes draggable buttons draggable if the drag is started from the button itself, and support for using the same quality values in Accept-Language headers as other browsers. It also enables local network access restrictions by default for users with Enhanced Tracking Protection (ETP) set to Strict, which means that you have to explicitly allow public websites to access local network resources. For Android users, Firefox 147 promises to better protect them against side-channel attacks, such as Spectre, by enabling Site Isolation by default, offering the same level of protection as desktop users. For Windows users, this release improves compatibility with some monitors, fixing tab selection issues. Firefox 147 also updates the View Transitions feature in developers tools to show transition pseudo-elements in the elements panel and the associated animations in the animations panel, as well as the JSON viewer with a new button for importing a resource into Firefox Profiler to get a breakdown of its size. Moreover, the pseudo-element selectors have been updated to allow you to add or edit them in the CSS rules panel, and anchor positioning was improved to allow elements with a valid anchor-name are given an ‘anchor’ badge in the elements view and display @position-try CSS rules in the CSS rules panel when selecting an element that uses position-try-fallbacks. For web developers, Firefox 147 brings support for the Navigation API, support for Storage-Access-Headers to allow servers to opt into unpartitioned cookies via HTTP headers, support for CSS anchor positioning, and support for the :active-view-transition-type selector. It also brings support for counter-* and quotes CSS properties in the ::marker pseudo-element, support for the Brotli format to CompressionStream and DecompressionStream, and support for exposing the active view transition on a document via the Document.activeViewTransition property. On top of that, it adds support for Unicode 17 and new locales, implements CSS root-font-relative units rcap, rch, rex, and ric, adds support for module service workers to improve compatibility for modern web apps, and allows importing of CSS stylesheets using the JavaScript module system and import attributes. Real-time notifications for compromised passwords. Microsoft Edge is integrating an in-context password breach notification system. This feature proactively informs users if their saved login credentials have been compromised in known data breaches, enabling them to take immediate action to secure their accounts. Edge Settings is migrating to WebUI2 to boost page responsiveness and introducing a series of minor visual and content upgrades to improve overall usability and utility. This includes optimizing for concise wording of individual settings, simplifying the number of pages and reorganizing content, and creating a cohesive user interface. New Autofill Personal Information Settings Configuration. A web form field collection consent toggle will be available in Autofill settings (edge://settings/autofill/personalInfo). This allows users to consent to Microsoft Edge collecting web form field labels (e.g., "First Name," "Email") to improve Autofill suggestion accuracy. Only field labels are collected and not user-entered data. The web field labels are stored securely per Microsoft's privacy standards. This new setting is manageable via existing policies in Autofill (e.g., AutofillAddressEnabled), EdgeAutofillMlEnabled. AutofillAddressEnabledis the parent setting forEdgeAutofillMlEnabled. The EdgeAutofillMlEnabled policy is the parent of this new setting, thus turning off the EdgeAutofillMlEnabled policy turns off this setting. Web AI APIs for prompt and writing assistance. Microsoft Edge now implements the Writing Assistance APIs and the Prompt API(for Edge extensions) with a local language model, Phi-4-mini, that is built into the browser. These easy-to-use JavaScript APIs are made available via Edge flags (set to Enabled, by default only for the Summarizer and Prompt API for extensions) so that sites and extensions can apply AI capabilities on the web. The small language model is downloaded as the first time any of these APIs is used and later shared across all domains, serving local AI use-cases with reduced cost, network independence, and increased privacy (since data input to the model doesn't leave the user’s device). Admins can control the availability of these APIs via the GenAILocalFoundationalModelSettings policy. These APIs are currently not implemented in China. Browser essentials is now separated into two distinct experiences (Performance and Secure Network) - both available from the Settings and more menu (“…” on the menu bar). For users having problems syncing browsing data across other signed-in devices, they can reset sync data from the Microsoft servers via Edge Settings edge://settings/profiles/sync/reset. This option should only be used if the sync data is available on one of the user's devices or if they want to delete all sync data from the servers. Note: In Microsoft Edge 139, reset sync is enabled for users encountering a "No permissions" MIP error and in Microsoft Edge 140, reset sync is enabled for users encountering a "Service disabled" MIP error.
