    Bold Fortunes forum, what happened ?

    To everyone's surprise, the site went back online a couple of weeks ago. Ugh! I'm just so tired of this.

    Most of you know that it's not actually my site, but it belongs to Sadie, a generous lady in England, who gave me the site because she believed in my work on Slimming Down Windows XP: The Complete Guide.

    It not actually being my site is sometimes (and too often now) very frustrating. I never know what's going on when something happens. It sure looked like it was gone for good this time when someone else had hold of its domain name.

    No matter, I was tired of moderating a forum. I have made the forum Read Only now. I want to get back to having fun with my computer.

    Wow. I'm sorry to hear that, N1K. I had something like that happen to me once, only it was an inside job.

    Someone was once working on that type of thing for me. I didn't like what he did to it. He got pi$$ed and ripped my site apart.

    He ripped out all the smilies, all the avatars, all the themes. He deleted many, many threads. He deleted my administrator account so I wouldn't be able to log into the controls of my own site.

    It was such a mess. It took me weeks to straighten everything out. Imagine having to go through hundreds and hundreds of posts and deleting the remnants of smilies...you know the red x thing that shows up when the smilie that supports it is removed?

    I had to delete many other threads, too, because the threads he deleted now made other threads not make any sense.

    And all my posts, including my guide, now showed "Posted by Guest" instead of by Bold_Fortune.

    What really hurt, though, he turned Sadie against me. He must have told her some real poo about me, because her and my relations have been strained ever since then.

    But what hurt worse than that? Sadie never even asked me for my side of the story. She just took his word for it.

    Yes, the site is gone, and will not be coming back this time. The site was actually owned by Sadie, a generous lady from England who gave me the site to further my work on Slimming Down Windows XP: The Complete Guide.

    She apparently let it go. And I can't blame her, she's been paying for it for over three years. The domain name was picked up by some magazine subscription service.

    But...

    ... that's why his guide was hosted on WinCert..

    Let your friends know about this change so N1K and WinCert can benefit from the traffic from my site. I'll be keeping my guide updated here on WinCert.

    Sorry, Rick. I screwed up your codebox edit when I was editing my reg file, and I don't know the code for codebox.

    (That codebox is a dumb **** thing. You have to copy and paste what's in a codebox to Wordpad instead of Notepad for things to line up for you properly. Plus editing it is pain...scroll and scroll and scroll and scroll to get to the end. But you do want you want.)

    I've been playing around with a Fresh-Install image that past few days.

    Once the XP installation is complete, I'll download and install all my Microsoft Updates.

    But before installing any drivers and programs, I click on this Master Reg File, and everything just about falls into place for me and how I want my installation to be.

    Delete Files Safely

    Most people take this one for granted these days. They pass it around like it's Internet common knowledge. But it took me a very long time to figure out how to do this. I emailed script writers to help me. I bugged them half to death on forums. No one knew exactly how to do this. So, yes, this is my script...no matter who else you think created it.

    I have incorporated a failsafe feature into my batch files.

    Files and folders will be moved and saved (Not deleted permanently. Later that will be up to you.) to a backup folder on C:\. The backup folder is simply named "Backup".

    Within the Backup folder, you will find the files and folders you removed, in smart placement. Their order of appearance will be identical to how XP's files and folders appear on your C Drive.

    When you remove files and folders from the WINDOWS and system32 directories, in the Backup folder you will first see a WINDOWS folder. Within the WINDOWS folder you will see the individual files and subfolders you removed, including the system32 folder. And within the system32 folder you will see its individual files and subfolders you removed. The same applies to the Documents and Settings and the Program Files directories.

    I created this smart placement so you would always know exactly where these files and folders came from should you decide to replace any to their original locations.

    Here's an example to get you started on making one for yourself.

    Media Player Classic

    I wrote this some time ago on my site.

    I've heard wondrous things about Media Player Classic, the alternative to Windows default Windows Media Player 6.4 (mplayer2.exe). Minimalists have nothing but praise for this player.

    Did you know, though, that the file size of the one file (mplayerc.exe) is 5.42MB big? While the additional files you need for Windows Media Player 6.4 weigh-in at 2.60MB?

    And did you know that Media Player Classic needs one of the files needed by Windows Media Player 6.4 to play *.WMA music files and *.WMV video files: The qasf.dll file.

    You can, however, play *.MP3 music files. And You can play *.AVI and *.MPG video files without the qasf.dll file.

    But you're still going to need the qasf.dll file to play *.WMA music files and *WMV video files...just as Windows Media Player 6.4 does.

    The qasf.dll weighs in at 216KB. 216KB + 5.42MB = more than 2.60MB

    Stop here. This is assuming you have trimmed the fat out of DirectX and Windows Media Player 10 like I have in PART 9 of the guide. I keep a slimmed version of WMP 10 on my system, and I don't know which files I keep for it that Media Player Classic may not need.

    But if you delete the files I do, keeping but a slimmed version on WMP10, and you would like Windows Media Player 6.4 (mplayer2.exe) to work for you also, put these files back to system32...

    Files Needed By Media Player 6.4 (2.60MB):

    Needed to start Media Player 6.4 (mplayer2.exe)

    msdxm.ocx

    Needed to play media files with Media Player 6.4

    I heard about the Pamela Anderson video, and I had to see it for myself. (Kidding.)

    Although, it really was one of the first things I looked for when I got my first computer. I locked up my computer so many times on porn sites, and had to pull the plug, I actually think I damaged my hardrive. Gateway had to replace it.

    I actually don't know why I bought my first computer.
