    Microsoft Edge 101 es la nueva versión del navegador del gigante del software y si lo usas y no la has recibido ya, deberías estar a punto de hacerlo, uses Windows, Mac o Linux, sistemas de escritorio para los que está disponible de manera oficial. Aparte tienes la versión para Android… y la de iOS, aunque esta última es únicamente lo que Apple y sus indecentes políticas de control dejan que sea.

    Centrándonos en Microsoft Edge 101 y, más concretamente en la versión de la aplicación para PC, que es donde suelen darse el grueso de novedades, la numeración capicúa no defrauda y después de una versión 100 muy redonda, pero más comedida de a los que nos tienen acostumbrados los de Redmond, el navegador vuelve a traer cosillas interesantes en su haber, especialmente para los usuarios más cafeteros.

    En primer lugar, Microsoft Edge 101 se lo pone más fácil a quienes usan múltiples perfiles de usuario, ya que a partir de ahora se podrá fijar el perfil predeterminado para arrancar siempre desde ese. Es decir, en lugar de, una vez cerrado el navegador, arrancar con el último perfil utilizado, lo hará con el que el usuario haya elegido como por defecto. Un pequeño detalle, pero de los que se agradecen (si usas varios perfiles, lo entenderás).

    No obstante, esta nueva política de perfil predeterminado o EdgeDefaultProfileEnabled no será aplicable si se ha especificado el parámetro –profile-directory.

    Otra novedad destacada de Microsoft Edge 101 es la mejor de accesibilidad de las aplicaciones web instaladas, un aspecto del navegador en el que la compañía está poniendo bastante empeño y en el que poco a poco se empieza a notar la intención de que estas aplicaciones web -progresivas o no- se comporten como aplicaciones nativas en Windows, salvando las distancias intrínsecas a un modelo y el otro.

    Microsoft Edge 101 facilita la integración de las aplicaciones web progresivas, permitiendo agregarlas a la barra de herramientas y lanzarlas desde ahí a través de un nuevo menú que las reúne a todas.

    Corrección: tal y como nos indican en los comentarios, la novedad con las aplicaciones web se refiere a la barra de herramientas del propio navegador y a un nuevo menú desplegable donde se sitúan las aplicaciones instaladas.

    A todo esto, se habla constantemente de aplicaciones web progresivas, pero a la hora de la verdad el funcionamiento con cualquier otro tipo de aplicación web que se instale, incluso páginas que no son aplicaciones como tal, es el mismo. Lo que cambia, claro, son las capacidades propias de la ‘aplicación’: el uso del almacenamiento, si es posible su uso sin conexión, etc.

    Siguiendo la información publicada en las notas de lanzamiento de Microsoft Edge 101, otras novedades del navegador para esta versión incluyen la mejora en la gestión de certificados, mejoras en la gestión de listas de sitios empresariales y mejoras en la gestión de otras tiendas de extensiones adicionales mediante la política que permite la instalación de extensiones desde ellas. No obstante, la recomendación es la misma: cuantas menos extensiones, mejor, y siempre que se pueda desde el directorio de Microsoft o o la Chrome Store.

    Microsoft Edge 101 introduce asimismo nuevas políticas en el tratamiento de determinadas funcionalidades y datos, por ejemplo para configurar la lista de comandos para deshabilitar atajos de teclado comunes o para permitir guardar páginas en el modo Internet Explorer, entre otras, incluyendo las mencionadas más arriba.

    Todo lo dicho y más de 25 parches de seguridad, además de correcciones y optimizaciones varias derivadas del código de Chromium, es lo que trae consigo Microsoft Edge 101, una actualización obligada por lo demás, tal y como ocurre con la que lanza cualquier navegador web moderno.

    Feature updates

    • Upcoming three-digit version number in user agent string. Starting with version 100, Microsoft Edge will send a three-digit version number in the User-Agent header, for example "Edg/100". Starting with Microsoft Edge 97, site owners can test this upcoming agent string by enabling the #force-major-version-to-100experiment flag in edge://flags to ensure their User-Agent parsing logic is robust and works as expected.

    • Personalize multi-profile experiences with profile preferences for sites. Users can personalize their multi-profile experience with the ability to create a customized list of sites for automatic profile switching in Microsoft Edge.

    • Navigate PDF documents using page thumbnails. You'll now be able to navigate through your PDF document using thumbnails that represent the pages. These thumbnails will appear in the pane on the left side of the PDF reader.

    • Configure the list of domains for which the password manager User Interface (UI) for Save and Fill will be disabled. Use the PasswordManagerBlocklist policy to configure the list of domains (HTTP/HTTPS schemas and hostnames only) where Microsoft Edge should disable the password manager. This means that Save and Fill workflows will be disabled, which ensures that passwords for those websites can’t be saved or auto filled into web forms.

    • Custom primary password. The browser already has the capability where users can add an authentication step before saved passwords are auto filled in web forms. This adds another layer of privacy and helps prevent unauthorized users from using saved passwords to log on websites. Custom primary password is an evolution of that same feature, where users will now be able to use a custom string of their choice as their primary password. After it's enabled, users will enter this password to authenticate themselves and have their saved passwords auto filled into web forms.
