Continuing its two-week release cycle, Mozilla published today the final builds of the Firefox 159 open-source web browser ahead of the official unveiling on October 27th, 2026.

For Linux users, Mozilla Firefox 159 improves memory usage on AMD GPU systems when viewing map or place results, fixes that very annoying tab detaching into a new window issue on Wayland, and fixes an issue with menus and panels fading in when animation effects are turned off in the operating system.

There aren’t many new features in Firefox 159, but Mozilla did make it easier to access your saved passwords from the sidebar without having to add the Passwords tool first. Also, this release further improves the AI-powered, rolling Smart Window feature with the ability to keep an eye on pages for you.

In addition, Firefox 159 adds support for searching opened tabs with the Ctrl+Shift+A keyboard shortcut, improves support for web addresses written in the Javanese, Balinese, Canadian Aboriginal Syllabics, and N’Ko scripts, and updates the AI chatbot’s Summarize page option to share the page’s address with the chatbot provider instead of the page’s text content.

Firefox 159 fixes many issues, including loading issues with sites that reject an HTTP/3 request and not falling back to HTTP/2, long drop-down lists on web pages showing a blank space in place of the last options until the list was scrolled, and importing of bookmarks from Google Chrome profiles that are signed in to a Google account.

Also fixed is an issue with the file upload dialog opening in the last folder a file was saved to, such as Downloads, instead of the folder last used for uploads, as well as an issue causing rapid memory usage growth when sites were left open in a minimized window, such as the Zoom web app.

For Android users, Firefox 159 improves tab reloading, particularly on Xiaomi and Redmi devices, improves video playback on some sites, such as The New York Times, and addresses an issue with alarms being silenced when a video was playing on some video streaming sites, such as YouTube.

For macOS users, Firefox 159 adds support for the native macOS share picker, improves support for web games when using a gamepad, adds support for apps that sign in through the default browser to open the sign-in page in Firefox instead of Safari, and improves support for the Apple Writing Tools suite when pasting text on sites.

For web developers, Firefox 159 adds support for scoped custom element registries, so custom elements that share a tag name can coexist on the same page, support for scroll-driven animations, so CSS animations and Web Animations API animations can progress with the scroll position of a container, and re-adds support for declaring let, const, and class variables in the Web Console.

Moreover, it updates the Sanitizer API to sanitize HTML as it’s parsed rather than afterwards, so custom element constructors no longer run for elements the sanitizer removes, updates WebGL to support the EXT_clip_control and EXT_texture_mirror_clamp_to_edge extensions on compatible devices, and updates WebGL 2 to support the EXT_texture_norm16 extension.
