Microsoft has released a stable version of its Edge 111 browser today, with the latest version number 111.0.1661.41. The update introduces an enhanced sidebar that integrates the AI tool Edge Copilot, optimizes the interface, and more.

The new Edge sidebar.

Microsoft has introduced a new Edge sidebar in the stable version of Edge 111, providing many new features that can improve user productivity, convenience and user experience.

 
  • The new Discover

Edge Copilot is a powerful tool that helps users improve productivity and efficiency. It provides intelligent suggestions and insights based on the web usage context and the user’s goals.

As a new Bing icon in the toolbar, Edge Copilot helps users compose better emails, search the Web faster, and learn new skills, all more easily.

 
  • Optimized Sidebar UI

With the new auto-hide feature, users can maximize the efficiency and convenience of the sidebar without sacrificing valuable screen space.

The Edge sidebar can be hidden when not in use and will only reappear when the user needs it.

  • Improved Sidebar Interaction

The new hover feature allows users to open the sidebar by hovering the mouse over the Bing icon in the toolbar. This improves user productivity and convenience by providing a seamless and intuitive way to access the tools they use most often.

Microsoft also continues to add Microsoft Feed functionality to the Microsoft 365 Edge new tab.

Microsoft is rolling out a new experience for the Microsoft 365 tab of the Edge Enterprise new tab. This experience will feature a new layout centred around a larger version of Microsoft Feed, providing more product content and moving productivity cards, including important emails, recent SharePoint sites, upcoming events and to-do lists, to the Microsoft 365 tab on the right.

Improved security

Enhanced security mode now supports WebAssembly for macOS x64 and Linux x64. more cross-platform (ARM64) support is expected in the future.

A new policy introduced: clean up data in IE mode when you exit your browser

Microsoft has introduced a new “InternetExplorerModeClearDataOnExitEnabled” policy that allows for the deletion of browsing history from Internet Explorer and Internet Explorer mode when closing the Edge browser. to remove browsing history from Internet Explorer and Internet Explorer mode.

Users can also configure this setting in the “Clear browsing data from Internet Explorer” option in the Privacy, Search and Services menu of Settings (edge://settings/ privacy).

  • Enhance your security on the web. Improvements to Enhance your security on the web in edge://settings/privacynow include Basic as the new default option. With this option, Microsoft Edge will apply added security protection to the less visited sites. This feature preserves the user experience for the most popular sites on the web.
  • Import Chrome data without Chrome during First Run Experience. This feature lets a user bring in their Chrome data by logging in to their Google account during Microsoft Edge’s First Run Experience. This feature can be turned off by disabling First Run Experience with the HideFirstRunExperience policy, or by setting AutoImportAtFirstRun to ‘DisabledAutoImport’.

The NewSmartScreenLibraryEnabled policy is now deprecated in Microsoft Edge version 106 and will be obsolete in Microsoft Edge version 107.

For enterprise customers, the following experiences are currently turned on by default: Search, Discover, Office.com, and Outlook. Administrators can control the availability and configure the Microsoft Edge sidebar using the HubsSidebarEnabled, ExtensionInstallBlockList, and ExtensionInstallForceList policies. The extension ID for each sidebar app can be found at edge://sidebar-internals. For more information, see Manage the sidebar in Microsoft Edge.
