the title says it all...ive been thinking of doing a software RAID setup on my laptop, but havent ever really messed around with RAID and havent seen a good, concise guide on how to do so. could someone point me in the right direction? if it helps, im interested in RAID 0 (striping), not mirroring...mostly to see how significant the performance boost is.

  6. Greetings All!! I am the new kid on the block for now. I have a Dell Dimension 3000 with Microsoft operating software, and a lot of freeware applications. QUESTION: I like a forum for EVERYTHING I use as applications. I cannot find much dedicated to the freeware named Secunia PSI. In a perfect world I would find, hypothetically, a Google or Yahoo group or a list made up of Secunia personnel and subscribers which allowed discussion of their concerns. I could not find one: I am asking for that reason. Summmary: Secunia PSI freeware: Discussion group, forum or list: ADVISE. I thank all for their help!

Ignore this program's name, because if you're a true Vista expert, you don't need it. But if you're like most people --- not tried-and-true Vista pros --- and don't know how to disable User Account Control, customize the menu power button, or disable or enable the Aero interface, then you'll want this program. This simple freebie makes it easy to customize many Vista features, via a simple interface. You'll be able to change the behavior of Windows Updates, User Account Control, the power button, Internet Explorer, and other Vista features. There's nothing big or dramatic here, but the program is free, and lets you easily customize Vista without having to dig through menu…

Create a sliding image show of pictures that scrolls across your desktop. Once you've got your photos what can you do with them? If you'd like to create a sliding image show of them that scrolls across your desktop, or share them with others using the photo-sharing site Flickr, you'll want to try out this software. It creates a ticker-style scrolling bar that you can put at a variety of places on your desktop, to display images. The images can be photos from your hard disk, from RSS feeds, or photos of yours from the photo-sharing site www.flickr.com. Hover your mouse over any image to see a description of it. Double-click an image, and it will appear in window displaying…

A new product called Chirpscreen is a screensaver that displays information from your social networks. Having just launched into beta, the screensaver currently shows content from Facebook and flickr, but plans to offer much more in the future. The Facebook content includes status updates from your friends and the flickr content can be your photos or photos from the network that match a particular tag. The application works by collecting the information from 3rd party sources via its APIs or RSS feeds to display a screensaver of your personalized content. With the screensaver active, pictures and updates from your friends float slowly across your screen. Each piece of con…

  13. im sick of having to hide the taskbar, so im in the market for a shell replacement for explorer. i already use a rocketdock plugin to replace the start menu, so i dont need any "right click --> start menu" functionality. and i dont do anything in explorer more advanced than navigating folders or copying/deleting/moving files. ideally id like something more stable and less resource hungry than explorer is. and i run 64-bit xp so id probably need a 64-bit version of something. ive tried xplorer2 (too many features ill never use) and just about every blackbox variation (UGLY), but i just keep coming back to explorer. does anyone have any suggestions or know where i can fi…

There are many reasons why you wouldn't want your operating system connect to Microsoft's server, be it for practical reasons or pure idealism. Based on the source-code of the award-winning xpy (version 0.9.8), Vispa allows you to easily tweak your Windows Vista for better privacy and security, even system performance. Do a few clicks rather than finding the write registry keys or program settings. The only recommendation I can give is not applying settings without vague knowledge of what you're doing. Not every setting is desired in every environment. Vispa is no tool for beginners, just a more convenient way of tweaking your operating system. Important: Some antivirus …

  16. my problem is simple...recently whenever i use RipIt4Me + DVD Decrypter + DVD Shrink to backup DVD's, audio playback sounds crackly (sort of how it would if there were high disk usage). but it only happens when im doing something involving DVD backup. the source files dont have to be on disk...they can be IFO's on the root of my drive that DVD Shrink is using to make an ISO. so i guess the problem may have to do with high disk usage. also, dvd decrypter seems to be taking much longer: what used to take Decrypter 20 minutes now takes well over an hour. lowering the process priority of dvd decrypter and dvd shrink does not fix the audio problem. but whats really confusing i…

Responding Heads enables you to launch programs, commands and actions via voice commands spoken into your PC microphone. The program uses the MS Speech recognition engine and is very easy to configure. It places a small animated head on your desktop that confirms that spoken commands and adds some animation to the process (this can be turned off). Responding Heads supports program launching, e.g say `Open Mail` to run Outlook Express, as well as several system and keyboard commands, text-to-speech conversion, and even typing of pre-configured keystrokes. Responding Heads is very easy to set up.

  21. This problem has been occurring rather frequently and is now driving me nuts. Every now and then, and when I have about 5/6 tabs open in IE 7 (7.0.5730.11), IE either crashes or simply hangs.... Is there anything that I can do to permanently fix this problem. I have windows XP SP2 with all the latest updates till now. Will be very very thankful if you can help me get out of this misery. P.S. Don't really want to, but should I dump IE and permanently shift to FireFox? System Explorer is a system monitoring and analysis program that picks up where the Windows "Task Manager" leaves off. It expands on the "Task Manager" by adding many more features, including detailed info on processes, Windows, IE addons, connections, drivers, opened files, Explorer, services, startups, and uninstallers. System Explorer is simply a fantastic collection of tools for system analysis and diagnostics.
