[Addon]Minimem V1.2.2

Recommended Posts

Initially developed for Firefox only, Minimem now can reduce the memory footprint of any application. It runs in the background and can be set up to optimize as many proceses as you'd like, using a very intuitive graphical interface. Unlike other memory optimization tools, it gives you full control over what applications you want to optimize, when and how often, as well as the possibility to only optimize memory when required and relevant.

It optimizes memory by removing as many non-necessary memory pages as possible from the selected processes. It does so at regular intervals which can be user-defined as well and every 30s by default, though uses an advanced pooling mechanism to ensure the CPU usage of Minimem remains low at all times. This then optimizes your applications which can load those pages back whenever they need, and makes your overall system perform much better whenever it is memory limited.

Minimem runs in the background and is fully non-intrusive. It stays in your tray where you can access its settings at any time and will remember your favorite settings for an optimal ease-of-use. Its intuitive GUI should make it useable for any type of user so no specific skills are required to take advantage of this great tool.

Typical applications are:

Reducing the memory footprint of memory-heavy applications that should not e.g. web browsers or office applications

Making it easier to run applications with memory leaks, e.g. Firefox 2 or extremely large footprints e.g. Firefox 3

Running multiple applications on the same computer e.g. web desktop tool, web browser, office application all concurrently

Use computers that are not so recent with modern applications

And many more...

Minimem in principle should support all Windows versions, though it is only tested on Windows XP 32 bits SP3. Should you encounter issues or bugs with other Windows versions please contact us via our Contact/Support page to report those; we'd then do our best to fix them.

I tested On Mozilla Firefox,Opera,Internet Explorer,Explorer.exe,Rthdcpl.exe,svchost,Ashampoo Magical Snap,winlogon.exe,Windows Media Player,Yahoo! Messenger,Babylon And Work It.

No offense mona, but I don't recommend using this software. :)

I don't agree with you actforu, there are many people with old or slow PC's without enough ram. So my recomendation is to people with old PC's and low ram. Thanks mona. It's not for me but I appreciate your kindness to help people ;)

I really appreciate everyones work don't take me wrong mona.

Though, this particular software and it's ways of clearing ram memory/cache cause some old pc builds to be even slower especialy with newer os, thus from my experience and knowledge about this matter I recommend not to use this software if you don't have a prehistoric ram e.g. 16mb. :) This software is a good complementary product to use with background application as in server environment but not a good choice for any foreground processes like end-user browsers are.

Whether you have lots of memory or very little memory, minimem will not help, and it will actually hurt performance.

The system memory manager already does a good job of paging out pages as necessary whenever there is memory pressure. And if an entire contiguous page has "leaked", then it will remain paged out since it will be unreferenced. Basically, the memory manager already does what this app purports to do. Except that the memory manager does a better, more efficient job of it.

Paging memory out and paging memory in are both very expensive operations. So you should page out only when you have to (why is there a performance penalty for too little memory? because you are forced to page in and out more). Aggressively, indiscriminately paging out (vs. paging out only when necessary, as the system memory manger does) will not accomplish anything except *increase* the number of times you page out and page back in, and that will only hurt performance, no matter how little or how much memory you have. The only solution to memory leaks is to fix the bugs that cause them; there is no magic silver bullet like what minimem claims to be.

Thanks for the info. I didn't realize that these programs were gimmicky. Are there any third party memory managers that you know of that do a better job than the system's memory manager?

i always thought those were gimmicks too. i remember a bunch started appearing back in the win98 era, but i dont think any of them did much of anything really.

That was during the RAM bottleneck days. That was when the determining factor of a branded computer's price was its memory capacity, rather than its video card, CPU, storage capacity, or motherboard functionality (certainly all of those played a role, but the importance of RAM was marketed like crazy; even to this day, Joe Computer Dinosaur says, "How much RAM does it have???" when the real bottleneck these days is hard-drive speed).

Naturally, it sparked a lot of snake oil salesmen claiming to have cures for inadequate RAM.

How's that for a trip down memory lane? I feel old.
