  1. Kinda sad we have to hack .DLLs/.EXEs to get what we want, but glad we can still do that.
  2. Oh yea, I love TweakGuides; been using him since UT2004. In the free guide (thanks!), pg393 talks about WEI, then states the Windows System Assessment Tool (WinSAT) is what actually tweaks HD/SSD settings. But it seems you still have to hand-tweak to get that score up to where it should be (7ish). Plus I can't find a listing on Google or any of my links that talks exactly what the WinSAT changes are or do.My SSD manufacturer (Intel) has a toolbox that will help maintain my SSD, & I would guess other manufactures do also. I would not recommend to run WEI/WinSAT due to the mysterious changes it does. Might be better to ask here though: http://ssdtechnologyforum.com/
  3. Thanks!I thought that addons=pre-installing new software, not removing software or tweaking the regerstry. Perhaps I took the "ADDon" name to literately? How would I go about building such an addon? A search for "addon guide" brings up nothing :/
  4. Oh really? Can you provide a link for that please? I searched "media" in the Addons sub-form & did not find anything.
  5. A few more Win7 on SDD tips & tweaks: zdnet.com windows-7-and-ssds-setup-secrets-and-tune-up-tweaks zdnet.com cutting-your-system-drive-down-to-size zdnet.com trimming-the-fat-from-your-system-drive thessdreview.com optimization-guides
  6. Seems we can keep Legolash2o busy forever by requesting new registery tweaks & file deletions forever it seems. I thought there would only be a few extra things to W7Tk, but every week we find more things to add. So, how about W7Tk be just a shell for an UI (at least for tweaks) that loads a user-editable text file that lists all the tweak options we want available to turn off/on or change? This will allow we "users" to edit the text file to add all the tweaks we want, while the W7Tk will act as a front-end to click those tweaks off & on quickly, & allow fast preference changes? This way, Legolash2o does not have to hardcode all the tweaks, warnings, etc himself, & just focus on the tool overall. This will release workload off of the sole programmer, extends the life of W7Tk, and allows most of we super-users who find all the regerstry entries & insights to make safe additions to the tool with out needing access to the source code. Similar to a .REG file, but loadable into a GUI for final editing. I hope you can understand the direction I am going with this. It will take a bit of time for the code to read the configuration text file, GUI builder, etc. But there will be long-term time-savings in the end IMHO. Also, this will allow people who have unique situations to add tweaks to W7Tk for themselves, so the other 90% of the population won't be bothered. Ideas for fields: registry address(es) entry type (text/bool/number) entry options (value, value meaning text) tweak title short text description of tweak long description/warning (to be shown when mouse hovered over, either as pop-up or side-column) preset value (I believe should be Window's out-of-box default, people should use W7Tk to make their own configurations. This is to prevent accidental over-writing of defaults.) I am fine to have a reduced feature set; eg instead of W7Tk creating off/on checkboxes for bool entries, just have a text field & I have to know to enter 0 or 1 to off/on. More of a W7Tk 2.0 suggestion. cheers
  7. What do you mean by "windows experience" please? The Window's 'speed' testing tool that spits out an "index"? You don't need the Windows Experience Index to optimize SSDs. You just have to make sure all the changes to SDD & OS (BIOs updates, turn on TRIM, turn off hibernation, moving folders, etc) are implemented. Info & tips on how to do this & test is here:http://www.zdnet.com/blog/bott/windows-7-and-ssds-setup-secrets-and-tune-up-tweaks/2910 http://www.zdnet.com/blog/bott/windows-7-and-ssds-cutting-your-system-drive-down-to-size/2941?pg=3 http://www.zdnet.com/photos/windows-7-and-ssds-trimming-the-fat-from-your-system-drive/6191299 There are other tools to test HD & system speed. I do think adding warnings of dependencies (eg need "Sample Music" to run Windows Experience Index) is a great idea & IMHO needed though. Thanks for the warning!
  8. +1 for these also; needed for my SSD instal reduction please
  9. It seems their system is on & off every few minutes. Though a backup host/mirror could be helpful.
  10. Often to save electricity, heat, etc, newer CPUs will put extra not-often used cores to sleep, or "park" them. This is fine if you are just going to web-browse, but if you are going to tax the CPU off & on, like in audio & graphics editing, gaming, running a server that has alot of data crunching... you might not want those core(s) to be parked at all, taking time to un-park when the other core(s) are full. Some feel running all cores all the time will help prevent the issues with an overloaded core; for DAWs this will be audio drop outs = very bad! Others fell this helps occasional "microstutters" & sluggishness when quickly taxing the CPU. Here is how to keep the cores from falling asleep. http://forum.cakewal....aspx?m=1861804 cheers
  11. I think I saw mentioned in another thread that language packs will be removed. I hope it will happen sometime soon! If not, if someone can kindly link a script that does please?
  12. Yes, but that leaves "programData" to old location As I posted above (though I have not tested myself) "ProgramData" is the "Users" folder for 64bit apps. But thanks to HapuKurk there is a workaround for me, so either way.
  13. I'm sure you don't need this information, but for my & perhaps others' reference (still trying to learn Win7 from my OK WinXP knowledge) here are some good info about ProgramData (like XP's Application Data": http://www.terryscomputertips.com/computers/finding-program-data-and-configuration-files-in-windows-7/ http://tuts4tech.net/2009/08/05/windows-7-move-the-users-and-program-files-directories-to-a-different-partition/ Perfect short "Move the Users and Program Files Directories To A Different Partition" tutorial. 14. Sweet, it will help me move folders off my SSD OS drive!
  15. As part of my "Installing Win7 on my small SSD" project, I ran across a few more tweaks. If they can be added to Win7Tk, that would be great. Or else I'll just make a reg script I tried looking for all your tweaks listed, but there seems to not be a central location. Disable Last Access Filestamp http://windows7theme...-windows-7.html info: http://msdn.microsof...v=vs.85%29.aspx Good: Speeds up disk writing, saves my SSD's life, etc Bad: Negates the ability to search by last access date. I rarely do this, but I do do it. If "folder synchronizer" software need this, then I'd be out of luck. I assume that OS's "Disk Cleanup/Compress Old Files" depend on this. Most of the time, epically when I hunt for my programming & audio files, I only look at creation date. Best: Turn off for some partions, on for others. I am not sure if this is possible; don't lose time hunting for it. Other SSD recommended tweaks: I think you have a few already implemented, but I listed them for completeness: http://blog.vmpros.n...lity-60-gb-ssd/ Disable Indexing Disable Defragmentation schedule MSCONFIG, boot timeout = 2 System Properties: Adjust for best performance Allocate your memory for “Programs” No pagefile (I'll likely turn it on at another drive & tune it via testing, but off on install not to thrash my SSD is awesome) Turn off “System Restore” [*]Stop and Disable Windows services: Windows Search, Disk Defragmenter, Superfetch, Internet Connection Sharing (ICS), Themes [*]Register settings list in the link above, though I do not care about: ClearPageFileAtShutdown, WaitToKillServiceTimeout [*]Disable hibernation Thanks for your time & consideration!
  16. I always wanted to auto-delete all the favorites when I install a new browser. There are a few bookmarks I'd like to import also, but I usually want to start fresh, & just refer to my exported backup. For the 10 sites I visit very often, I make a home.html page with the links I want, & set the browers' homepage to that.
  17. http://www.7tutorial...s-startup-sound I can't find the registery key for it on the net, but I don't see the need to have it on. If that startup sound can be deleted, I'd be happier, but just off is great. TIA
  18. I'm thinking this question may have been directed at me; since I requested it.Not yet either; I'm still getting files ready & downloaded for installation. Just got in Komplete7, & downloaded 2Gb worth of updates.... comes in like 10DVDs. I might not make configs for all BlackViper's profiles, but I'll be willing to share my profile
  19. Perhaps I may be the only one doing this, but I think since good 16Gb USB pen drives are easy to find under $20USD, I can guess others may want other files on there also.cheers!
  20. In this case 1 > 2!Might be a bit late, but for others' sakes; search here if you're in USA: http://slickdeals.net/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=9&sort=lastpost&order=&icon=27 http://dealnews.com/
  21. Thanks for the first hand experience!I'm guessing an MS official tool would not; IE has been married to the OS... but somehow for Euro customers they made an exception? Might have to find the DLLs/files/reg entries by hand... A quick google link brings me this tip: http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/150801-remove-ie8-from-windows-7-x64-sp1/ But I guess you knew about this one . Have any luck with it? I guess a registery cleaner after installing IE9 might be needed if there are issues. Also, it seems Revo Uninstaller does a good job, & perhaps Comodo. I don't think I want to install a big program just to get rid of another big program my 1st approach. Any more advice? cheers
