Beginners Guides: Computer Error Beep Codes -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Since I'm the "computer expert" among my friends and family, I often get those late night phone calls and e-mails asking me what's wrong with their computer. I'll be honest. It does get quite frustrating and annoying at times when people start off with "What did I do?" I understand that they're only asking me because they trust I can do a good job, and they really don't have anyone else to turn to. When I start fixing a computer, 99% of the problems I see are software related. Most of the time it is you, the user that wrecks, breaks, crashes, or ki…

The capacity of all hard drives are measured by the manufacturers using true SI (metric) nomenclature. In this system, there are 1000 units in a kilo, 1000 kilo in a mega, 1000 mega in a giga, and so forth. Computers, however, are not based onthe base-10 arithmetic the SI system is. As such, the binary approximations are 1024 units in a kilo, 1024 kilo in a mega, 1024 mega in a giga, and so forth. The net result of this discrepancy in systems is that anything counted in SI units will always be larger than if it were counted in computer units. For example, a 200GB hard drive is actually 200,000,000,000 bytes in size. In computer terms, this is 200,000,000,000/1024 = 195,3…

Only a couple of years ago, desktop machines with 4GB of RAM were rare. Only high-end CAD designers and ultra-hardcore gaming enthusiasts were considering, let alone actually installing, 4GB of RAM in their machines. Today however, RAM is much less expensive, and system builders such as Dell or HP routinely offer the option to build a system with 4GB of RAM. Because of this, we are often asked why Windows Vista / Windows Server 2003 / Windows XP etc. only sees a portion of the installed memory. It is pretty common for a machine with 4GB of RAM to actually show between 3.1 and 3.6GB of RAM installed, although this number may actually be less depending on hardware. The…

Used 2.5" HDDs sold on Aliexpress show misleading data, few hours of use and good health within Crystal Disk Info marked real numbers. My question is: what do they change to show these results? They (Chinese) remove and modify disable functions of the original firmware features and power management?

HP ProBook 4740s Windows 10 When I installed graphic driver from: AMD website, Windows update, Device Manager, and many driver updater tools like IObit Driver Booster ... a black screen appears for too long time (with sound) and never ends and PC freeze until pressing power button, and after restarting Windows fail to boot. I installed AMD Auto-Detect and Install Tool but that ended with error 182. Sometimes, after updating the graphic driver, Windows starts but this error code 31 appears. Please help.

What do you use for cleaning of LCD displays? I have tried a lot of products and I can say that Carl Zeiss wipes works best for me. They don't leave any stains while cleaning and dry very fast. At first those wipes contained alcohol, but the newest line of product doesn't contain any alcohol. Post your recommendations below.

I am attempting to plug 2 guitars into 1 amp input, using a 1/4" "Y" adapter, specifically a Radio Shack part# 274-892 adapter. What I want to do is to keep 2 guitars plugged in, only playing 1 at a time, just for convenience to minimize plugging/unplugging. The problem is that when 2 guitars are plugged into this adapter, neither guitar will be heard unless the volume on both guitars is turned up. Its almost like this adapter is wired in series, like Christmas tree light. Yknow, when one goes out, they all go out The guys at RS dont know anything about it, but it seems to me that RS has this thing built wrong. I believe a Parallel adapter would be what is needed, so ei…

For a start, I'm deeply disappointed with Logitech! I had Logitech MX Revoution Mouse, until one day it started to have double click issues. More on this problem here: http://forums.logite...ick/td-p/243999 Well, I've decided to sell the mouse as it were (with this double click failure) and a year and a half ago I've bought Logitech MX 1100 mouse that recently started giving me that ol' double-click problems. Now, I've downloaded this application that helps a bit, but can't solve the problem completely. Not to mention that I do not want to use a third party software for my mouse to function properly. There another option, I can fix that lousy Omron clicker in Logitech mou…

According to the user manual this motherboard have Realtek ALC887 audio codec which supports 7.1 or 8 channel audio. But in the ASUS site and in the manual it says it supports only 5.1 or 6 channel audio I have now a 2.1 system and plans to upgrade to a 5.1 or 7.1. The MB have three 3.5mm at the back (green pink and blue) and 2 at the front(green and pink) I changed the speaker configuration to 5.1 in the Realtek HD audio manager. Now the 3 back panel jacks act as the audio out. When it is set to 7.1 the 3 back panel jacks and the front headset jack (the green one)acts as the audio out. I tested it with plugging my speaker cable to all the jacks. So the motherboar…

Hey hardware gurus, I plan to replace my 320GB SATA I disk for something newer. Since I moved to SSD this old HDD is far the loudest thing in my machine. Which drive would you suggest. Since I don't plan to spend too much, I planned to replace it with new 500GB 3.5" 7200 drive. Most important thing is that the new disk is as quiet as possible. I have found couple of disks in similar price range and I need help to choose the right one, so here they are: Have in mind that I am buying this disk in the local store, but I have converted prices in US dollars. 1. HDD SATA II 500 GB HITACHI GST Deskstar, 3,5", 7200rpm, 16MB (Warranty: 24 months) - Cheapest price $70 2. …

Hi all, sorry i haven't been active at all. I've been busy with stuff plus just living life really. Anyways My Dell D630 has just randomly started to freeze, my theory is that the GPU/CPU/MoBo has over heated and is now on its last legs and still trying to fight till the end, semptoms that show are the screen flickers a lot and then its like windows completely crashes and nothing moves and/or the sound is completely destorted (if something was playing..) Specs are: Intel Core 2 Duo 2.20GHz (i think) 4GB RAM 80GB HDD nVidia Quadro NVS 135M 128MB Brand new battery, 9-cell. Anythink that i could do to maybe fix it? or just bit the bullet and let it go? haha Thank…

I plan to buy myself a new external 2.5" hard drive, that will be mostly used for backup purposes. These two disks are my choice: HDD External 2.5" 750 GB StoreJet 25M3 Transcend, USB 3,0 HDD External 2,5" 750 GB WD My Passport, USB 3.0 WD looks/is more attractive that Transcend except it has 24 months warranty while Transcend has 36 months warranty. Any recommendations/experience on this?

So I been having problems with my HDD freezing, its a: 500GB Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 (desktop sized) I updated the firmware and now the problem is worse (or finally clear, because I did not get the SMART error before fw update.) I notice allot of people having similar problems with this drive On boot I get a SMART error saying I should back up and replace drive, press F1 to continue...In AIDA64 it also shows up (I also get a Windows error message) Does anybody know a cheap way of maybe fixing the problem, other than replacing the disk (cant afford one and I cant do this either )

My Corsair Voyager Mini 16GB doesn't work anymore This device is one year old, never had any issues until now. When I plug it in the device does not appear in Windows Explorer nor in Disk Management. Can I safely say that there is no hope for the data on it (although I didn't have any important stuff) or there is a way to bring him back to life? I have bought a lot of stuff from Corsair (memory modules, usb flash drivers, PSU) and never had any issues with any of those. This is the first time I'll have to use warranty. I would surely like to bring the device back to life so if there are any tips or recommendations I would be grateful. Thanks! P.S. I have also posted this…
