  1. Those of you with memories like elephants may recall the case of the Microsoft Knowledge Base Article which contained the following classic: A Connection Manager Connection Does Not Connect After Being Disconnected There was a rumour going around back then in 2003 that Microsoft had planted such error messages to subjugate humanity to its dark will by means of provoking a logic feedback loop synaptic collapse. Well, the black helicopter brigade may have been right, because here's a warning from Vista:

  12. File Extension Changer makes it very easy to change a file's extension. It major features are: * By integrating in file's context menu, File Extension Changer makes it very easy to change a file's extension. * By integrating in folder's context menu, extensions of multiple files can be changed in one go. * In normal mode too, files & folders can added using drag & drop and extensions of multiple files even from different folders can be changed in seconds. * Advanced Mode features include conditional changing of extensions in which the user can provide some conditions on the basis of which extensions are changed. Also this list can be saved as a file for later use. * New path for files can be provided to move all the renamed files to the new folder. * Batch file can be created to UNDO any changes done. Moreover, batch or REDO file can be created for the rename process by which the entire renaming can be redone. * Log file can be created for each session to log the renaming activities. If you experience any problems using File Extension Changer, please refer to the following notes that I hope will solve many of the common problems related to the program. NOTE * Backup, redo and log files are saved in the File Extension Changer's folder for DragnDrop Mode and Directory Mode. For Shell Mode, the backup file is saved in the folder where the file whose extension is changed is present. * Backup, redo and log file (for DragnDrop Mode and Directory Mode) can be created only when File Extension Changer is present on a media which is NOT write-protected. Otherwise, the program will show an error. While running the program from a read-only media, disable backup, redo and log file creation for File Extension Changer to function properly. * Remember that changing a file's extension will NOT change or convert its contents according to the extension. For example, changing the extension of an 'WAV' file to 'MP3' file will only renames the file but the content of the file is still in the WAV format. * DO NOT select 'Change Extension' from context menu when more than one files are selected, as it will open up many processes of File Extension Changer. Instead, for multiple files, run the program from the 'Programs' group in 'Start Menu' and then add the desired files to be renamed. * Providing improper extension to a file may make it unusable. In that case, change the file's extension to the original one either using the backup 'BATCH' file (if created) or manually. * If the path of file is changed using 'Change Path' option, the renamed file will be moved to that folder. * If 'Change Path' is checked, the backup batch file will NOT be able to UNDO the path. However, filename can be reverted back to the orignal one. * REDO batch file will not work if 'Change Path' option was selected during its session. * Using File Extension Changer from a file's context menu for 'lnk' extension files, (i.e. link files or shortcuts) from shell menu will direct it towards the actual target file & not the shortcut itself. * Using File Extension Changer from a folder's context menu will show files present in that folder. Files present in the subfolders are neither shown nor affected. * In drag & drop mode, the user should add only file(s). The files may be present in different folders. But adding of folder(s) will do nothing. If you want to rename the contents of a folder, use 'Add Directory' or right click a folder & select 'Change Extension(s)'. * The integration in context menu of files & folders is optional & can be changed by re-installing the application. Remember to uninstall the application first. * New filename+extension should be NOT be same to any other file already present in the destination folder or should NOT become same after the change. (For example - if the extensions of the following two files ABC.INI & ABC.INF present in the same folder (or is to be moved to same destination folder after rename) are to be changed to TXT, then new filename+extension for both files will become same).

  14. For adding your ntoskrnl to your XP CD,Try this: Make a directory on your XP CD, under this path: $OEM$\$$\System32 The next thing you need to do, is rename your ntoskrnl.exe file to oemkrnl.exe and place it in the folder you just created above. Now, in your winnt.sif file, add these commands: [Unattended] UnattendedMode=FullUnattended OEMPreinstall=Yes OEMSkipEULA=Yes [GUIRunOnce] bootlogo.cmd Next create a bootlogo.cmd file which contains this: bootcfg /RAW /A /Kernel=OEMKrnl.exe /ID 1 bootcfg /Timeout 0 Here's a brief explanation of the above code: When you install Windows XP, it copes the $OEM$\$$\System32 folder to %windir%\system32, thus, placing your oemkrnl.exe file into your system32 folder. When XP Setup then processes the GUIRunOnce section of your winnt.sife file, it adds the switch /kernel=oemkrnl.exe to your boot.ini file, which forces windows to use your edited file, instead of the one shipped with windows.

  17. Security Process Explorer is an enhanced task manager, that provides advanced information about programs and processes running on the computer. It displays all the standard information, including file name, directory path, description, CPU usage etc. as well as a unique security risk rating. This rating is conclusive and relies on the expertise of the user to determine whether the process should be terminated or removed. Security Process Explorer allows you to monitor CPU and memory usage graphs per process, view detailed processes information (with descriptions), stop and start new processes, set priorities and much more. You can easily find and remove unnecessary background processes as well as assigning more resources to demanding processes like games, realtime multimedia applications and cd writing softwares. Replacing Task Manager If you click File > Replace Task Manager, Security Process Explorer integrates itself into your system so that you can access the module by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del, or by right clicking on an empty part of the taskbar and selecting Task Manager. 19. Windows XP SP3 RC is available exclusively to over 15,000 testers via Microsoft Connect. The Redmond company is delivering all members of the beta testing program of XP SP3 with a script set up to introduce a registry key, that subsequently permits access to the Release Candidate of XP SP3. Now you can get your hands on the first Release Candidate for Windows XP Service Pack . The fact of the matter is that a registry hack to access a testing build of Windows Vista SP1 debuted in mid October. Modifying the registry allowed Windows Vista users to grab the Beta of Service Pack 1 straight from the Microsoft Windows Updates servers. The same is now the case for Windows XP. Well, the hack is nothing more, and nothing less than this script coming from Microsoft. Of course all participants in the beta testing process of Windows XP SP3 are under a strict non-disclosure agreement with Microsoft. But there are leaks, of course. All you have to do is play around with the registry. You will be able to find the hack in question on WinFuture. Don't worry if you cannot speak German, it's not relevant in the least. Just copy the code that starts with "@echo off" into a text editor. It doesn't matter the name under which you save it, but what does matter is the extension. Save As "WinXPSP3RC.cmd" for example, but pay attention to the .CMD, and in notepad select the All Files option. Apply the hack; it may require a restart, and then just check for Updates. Under Custom updates you will be able to find Windows XP Build 2600.xpsp.071030-1537: Service Pack 3,namely the Release Candidate for XP SP3. I recommend to do this on a Virtual PC. Here are some Screenshots: "WinXPSP3RC.cmd"
