We have recently got a Cryptlocker variant in our company. We have managed to disable and delete it and we have also restored the files that were already encrypted from a recent backup. I will soon write an article with suggestions on how to protect your machine or a domain from a Cryptolocker viruses, because it seems that Anti-virus companies can't keep up with this new threats. In the meantime, please share your info on how do you protect your machine or your network.

Good evening WinCerters! I've recently started on a new education. In the building we have a wireless network without protection on it. However to use it external you have to sign in on a VPN network, that is run in the unsecured network. The most things works fine, like WebAccess and IM programs, however Thunderbird and Steam + some other applications are unable to establish connection (might be because they use ports that are blocked by the VPN to access the internet). I was thinking about somehow rerouting all network activity on my laptop to be through port 80 (web port - open)? Or to use my other laptop at home as a proxy server? that can route all my outgoing conne…

OK, I just got back from a "Training" course from work on ESET. Since MAC attacks have gone up 17% this last year, ESET is going to release a version for MAC later this fall. It will be added to the install CD that will work with Windows so there will be no need to use a separate installer and next year they will release the Linux version and all 3 will be on 1 CD. Also NOD 5 will have a gamer mode option. Side note, all the employees got a free license key.

Hey all, Here is a list of some of the best Portable Antivirus Software available today for download. Click on individual links to know more about them. 1. ClamWin: Probably the most popular Portable Antivirus today. It is open-source application and the download file comes without any virus definitions. When you download it and run it for the first time, it then downloads the definitions and updates itself for the big fight. 2. Norman Malware Cleaner: Works against some well known malware scripts. You can use this in command line mode, when your Windows GUI has been disabled by the virus present in your system and you can no longer use Windows. It is also suggested…

Some of the latest security updates for Windows XP will not be installed on machines infected with a rootkit virus. A rootkit is sneaky malware that buries itself deep inside the Windows operating system to avoid detection. Microsoft said it had taken the action because similar updates issued in February made machines infected with the Alureon rootkit crash endlessly. The latest updates can spot if a system is compromised by the Alureon rootkit and halt installation. http://www.wincert.net/news/security/2033-infected-xp-owners-left-unpatched-.html

I've received several suspicious e-mails in the last couple of days, so I've decided to check the contents of the attached .zip file and without a surprise, there was an .exe file in it. What is not good, is the fact that neither Microsoft Security Essentials antivirus nor Eset Nod32 wasn't able to detect it once I've scanned the file. At least Microsoft Outlook mail scanner marked this mail as spam. So I wasn't entirely unprotected The bogus message subject is something like this: Subject: UPS Tracking Number 8279775. Sender: UPS Manager Ramona Mock parcel@ups.com Here's the subject of the mail: Dear customer! The courier company was not able to deliver your parcel by…

I have a Cisco 2811 Integrated Service Router and I been trying to use it to replace my Netgear SOHO Wireless Router with my new Cisco 2811. I haven't really done this since school, about 2 years ago, so I don't remember a lot. What I should do is pull out my notes and review them again. Anyways, So far I can ping google, my website, yahoo, etc. From the router. But I can not browse the web on a computer I have connected to it. FastEthernet0/0 is connected to the Modem and FastEthernet0/1 is connected to a computer. I set up FastEthernet0/0 for DHCP and it does grab the IP address from Comcast. Now, I set up FastEthernet0/1 DHCP also and the computer it is connected to pi…

Which one and why, please at least give it some reason. Even if its just a trivial one. I'm trying to compare which browser our users prefer the most. I am using Google Chrome browser from the day it hit beta stages, and I continued to use it since then. My opinion on Chrome: Pros: - User Interface is very simple and clear - It is very fast, probably the fastest browser today (Article) - Bookmarks manager and simplicity of adding a new bookmark - Modularity, if one of the tabs freezes, others continue to work. For that reason, each tab is ran in its own process. Cons: - No RSS support ( I really miss this one) - No addons (Firefox is an addon king, hats down for tha…
