Microsoft’s troubles with Windows 11 October updates

Microsoft has been facing several issues following the rollout of the Windows 11 24H2 update. What began with driver crashes and disappearing mouse cursors has escalated into more severe problems, including undeletable data and network failures.

The latest Patch Tuesday, on October 8, introduced security updates KB5044284 (for Windows 11 24H2) and KB5044285 (for older versions). Unfortunately, many users are experiencing installation failures, with error codes like 0x800736b3 and 0x80070005.

If you’re also struggling to install these updates, a simple workaround is available:

Visit the Microsoft Update Catalog.
Search for KB5044284 or KB5044285.
Download the appropriate .MSU files (x64 or ARM64) for your system.
Double-click the files to install and follow the prompts.
Alternatively, you can use the Windows 11 Installation Assistant for a smoother and easier update process.

Please remember that some users also reported that the OpenSSH service stopped working after the update. To fix this, you should delete or rename the folder at C:\ProgramData\ssh\logs, which should restore the service.

If you’re facing persistent issues, you can uninstall the update by going to Settings | Windows Update | Update history | Uninstall updates and remove KB5044284. A restart will revert your system before installation of this update.

Microsoft confirmed that they’re continuing to work on these issues.
