Microsoft unites Clipchamp and Stream
Microsoft is taking a major step in simplifying its video tools by merging Clipchamp, its powerful video-editing app, with Stream under the unified Clipchamp brand. This rollout begins in December 2024 and will continue into 2025, creating a seamless video creation, storage, and sharing experience within its ecosystem.
The revamped platform will integrate smoothly with Microsoft 365 services such as OneDrive, SharePoint, and Teams, giving users an all-in-one solution for managing video content. “No existing content will be affected, and all current features from Clipchamp and Stream will remain available,” assured Alli Parrett, Microsoft’s product marketing manager.
With this unification, users can look forward to enhanced capabilities, including sophisticated video editing tools, customizable video templates, and AI-powered summarization features. For organizations, tools like shared branding kits and templates will simplify maintaining consistent visuals across teams. This transition follows Microsoft’s earlier move to retire Stream (Classic) in favor of the more modern Stream (on SharePoint).
The decision to center its video strategy around Clipchamp reflects Microsoft’s long-term vision. Since acquiring Clipchamp in 2021, the company has gradually made it the go-to video platform within Microsoft 365. This aligns with recent changes, such as combining personal, work, and school accounts into a single Teams app last year.
Additionally, Microsoft has phased out older tools like the Windows 10 Video Editor, shifting users to Clipchamp as part of its updated Photos app. While the Photos app boasts modern editing features, it no longer supports the legacy Video Editor.
Microsoft expanded Clipchamp’s reach at last year’s Ignite conference, opening up its video tools to Microsoft 365 commercial users, including those with Enterprise (E3 and E5) and Business (Standard and Premium) subscriptions. This latest unification effort is another step toward offering a more cohesive and efficient video experience for both individual users and businesses.
