  1. An ESD wrist strap would cost you maybe $1 and is very handy to have. I keep one in my repair bag. I used to just grow a third arm, but I got strange looks so I got the ESD strap. The main thing to remember with ESD is that the voltage potentials must be equalized BEFORE you touch the items. So keep all your parts on the same surface, don't move around too much, and try to rest your arm on a metal casing (that's grounded) at all times. It's awkward, but works. And always handle the items by their edges. NEVER touch exposed connectors, EVEN WHEN GROUNDED!
  2. Take your time. I'd rather it be correct and late than punctual and wrong.
  3. It's always possible that the hotfix is flawed and M$ will release an update to it.
  4. Maybe the clue to kb955759 is in what it fixes: Maybe it's the changes to the wmp11 files that are triggering it? It's hard to tell.
  5. Oh God that's the funniest thing I've seen all week! Priceless
  6. Sweet! I'm building fresh sources to test on. Just waiting on your release.
  7. I use User_hidden's QFE XP updatepack. When using the new version 1.1.8, I get the following prompts. On XP Pro SP3 with integrated MCE I get the following errors using XPtsp GUI 2.1.0.1. KB955759 gets reported in WU/MU as a needed critical update (even though it's included). KB969084 gets reported in qfecheck as "This hotfix should be reinstalled". No errors without XPtsp integrated. KB955759 - AppCompat update for Indeo codec: December 08, 2009 KB969084 - Remote Desktop Connection 7.0 client update for Remote Desktop Services (RDS) for Windows XP SP3
  8. I just got done testing my MCE build and that SMSS.exe hex editing worked perfect! Great job! :thumbsup_anim:
  9. If you don't mind replacing the noisy fan, I've ordered silent fans from http://www.dorothybradbury.co.uk/ several times in the past. Dorothy has been operating her business for many many years and hand picks the fans she sells after extensive testing for noise. If she doesn't have a particular size, she'll either source it for you or recommend another dealer. Awesome service!
  10. Personally, I'd remove OCZ from the list and add Crucial for RAM and Seasonic for PSU. Seasonic is a major OEM and supplier, the others just rebrand their work. Good luck on the replacement RAM when it shows. Make sure the BIOS timings match the RAM, don't rely on the SPD readings. And run memtest86 before allowing the system to boot to Windows.
  11. Yeah, I noticed that too, which was why I said I'm unsure how to fix it. Polling the system resolution at first boot and selecting an appropriate background would take care of it, but I don't know how you'd do that. Anyway, it's no longer a priority for me since I've stopped using CAD2009 on my builds.
  12. Disregard. I've confirmed my issues have nothing to do with XPtsp. Carry on!
  13. Awesome news! So far 2.1.0.0 has fixed all my outstanding issues. Thank you. *Edit, I'm actually troubleshooting an intermittent issue with DriverPacks that may or may not be related to XPtsp. I'm finding that the dps Finisher .log file is not being written to %windir% so either: 1. the file is not being written 2. the file is being deleted 3. something is interfering with the file being written I have the finisher run during ROE and the only item run at ROE is XPtsp (after finisher). This is a new problem, so I'm still looking into it.
  14. Thanks Rick. Very nice. A picture is worth 1000 words, but a video...
  15. If gaming was a priority, I'd definitely recommend a Radeon HD5870. They are far and away the best card for the $$ and one of (if not THE) fastest cards on the planet right now. The review I read says the idle power draw is a miserly 27W which is ridiculously low. But since $$ is a concern, I'd recommend the HD5670 which you can get for ~$99 from NewEgg. I'm seriously considering trading my nvidia 8800GTS in for a HD5870, I'd save money on my power bill too! And yes, stay away from off-brands whenever possible for warranty reasons. I think BFGtech has the best warranty in the business from all accounts.
  16. Very nice addition. Thank you. If you use the "spoiler" tags in the first post it would clean it up a bit better. 17. I did warn you... Yeah, no speaker.
  18. My tower is a P182 and I love it! My only criticism is the distance between the upper HDD tray and where the first card slot (closest to CPU) means that you can't easily remove the HDD tray cage without being careful about the GPU power cables. Very nice case! The P190 is physically larger in ever dimension and has a 200mm top fan and a massive side fan. I built a system for a coworker using a P190, it's a beast! Both the P180/P190 series have rubber grommets in the back panel for water cooling hoses (which I never needed). Very nice airflow design. I'll try to take some pics of my system so you can see the general layout.
  19. My kids would destroy it in less than 5 minutes!
  20. The most important aspect of a case (other than can it hold all your stuff) is airflow. A case that does not have enough airflow is like asking a runner to run a race with a sock in their mouth. Larger fans can push more air at lower speed so are quieter. Fan grill design is also important to minimize airflow turbulence which causes noise. Tidying your cables can increase airflow efficiency within the case. You can also try building ductwork from cardboard to control the direction and flow of the air through the case. I did this with my Antec P180 (love it) so I don't have to have a fan on my CPU cooler, it's just ducted to the top/back case fans. Isolating vibration-causing components from the case (HDD/ODD) with rubber grommets can keep the metal case itself from resonating.
