Microsoft Introduces Xbox Game Pass Core, Replacing Xbox Live Gold Membership
Microsoft has just announced the discontinuation of Xbox Live Gold, the long-standing online multiplayer gaming service for Xbox consoles. This change comes after 21 years of Xbox Live Gold’s existence. Instead, Microsoft will be introducing a new service called Xbox Game Pass Core, which will contain all the existing features of Xbox Live Gold while offering even more benefits.
One addition to Xbox Game Pass Core worth mentioning is the inclusion of a large game library with over 100 titles available for subscribers. This expansion should enhance the gaming experience and provide players with a broader range of options. What is interesting is that the Xbox Game Pass Core will cost the same as Xbox Live Gold, maintaining the current cost of $9.99 per month or $59.99 per year. This should ensure an easy transition for existing Xbox Live Gold subscribers, as they will be automatically converted to Xbox Game Pass Core subscribers.
As this news started circulating within the gaming community, responses have been mixed. Some users view this change as an upgrade to Xbox Live Gold and thus anticipate an improved selection of games. On the other hand, there’s a lot of concern regarding the fate of games previously acquired through Games with Gold, which is a program that grants free games each month to Xbox Live Gold subscribers, and whether they will remain accessible.
Unfortunately, reports so far suggest that Games with Gold will also be discontinued alongside the transition. The planned change is expected to take effect on September 1, 2023, marking a significant shift in Microsoft’s gaming offerings.
