Microsoft tones down Copilot in Notepad
Microsoft is starting to quietly rethink how AI shows up in Windows 11, and Notepad is the first place where you can see it happening.

In the latest Insider preview, the familiar Copilot branding has disappeared from Notepad. The AI-powered features are still there, but they’ve been renamed to something much more neutral: “writing tools”. Even the icon has changed, while the Copilot logo is gone, replaced with a simple pen symbol.
The shift goes beyond just naming. Inside settings, references to AI have also been toned down. Instead of clearly labeled AI controls, these features now sit under a more generic “Advanced features” section. Functionally, nothing has changed, and you can still use or disable them, but the presentation feels far less pushy.
This isn’t a random tweak. Microsoft has been under pressure for how aggressively it pushed Microsoft Copilot across the whole OS. Many users saw it as clutter rather than a helpful addition. Now, the company appears to be stepping back and making AI feel more optional and less in-your-face.
Notepad is just the beginning. Other built-in apps like Paint and even File Explorer have also been packed with Copilot integrations, and it wouldn’t be surprising to see similar changes there soon.
Microsoft isn’t removing AI, it’s simply reframing it. Instead of branding everything around Copilot, the company seems to be focusing on making these features blend in more naturally.
