Microsoft’s view of the ideal gaming PC
Microsoft has shared its own guidance on what a well-balanced gaming PC should look like for Windows 11, breaking systems into three performance tiers based on resolution and visual quality. The idea is to help players choose hardware that actually matches their playing style, rather than overspending in the wrong areas.

For entry-level gaming, aimed at 1080p resolution with medium settings, Microsoft suggests a modern quad-core processor such as the AMD Ryzen 5 5600 or Intel Core i5-12400. On the graphics side, cards like the NVIDIA GTX 1660 Super or AMD Radeon RX 6600 are considered sufficient for smooth gameplay at this level.
Moving up to mid-range gaming, designed for 1440p resolution and high settings, the recommendation shifts to a stronger six-core CPU. Examples include the Ryzen 5 7600 or Intel Core i5-13600K. These are paired with more capable GPUs such as the NVIDIA RTX 3060 Ti or RTX 4060 Ti, or AMD’s Radeon RX 6700 XT.
For high-end or 4K gaming, Microsoft recommends eight-core processors or better, such as the Ryzen 7 7800X3D or Intel Core i7-13700K. At this tier, graphics performance becomes critical, with GPUs such as the NVIDIA RTX 4080 or AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX recommended to handle ultra-high resolutions and demanding visuals.
Beyond CPU and GPU choices, Microsoft advises 16GB of RAM as a practical minimum for gaming today, while 32GB is ideal for heavy titles or modding. Storage-wise, a 1TB NVMe SSD is suggested to keep load times short and enable features like DirectStorage.
Overall, Microsoft recommends that the guidance focus on balance, matching hardware to resolution, monitor capabilities, and real-world usage rather than chasing raw specs alone.
