  1. 64-bit?! yyyyyyeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!
  2. 2 questions: -how does this compare to spyware terminator? -why did they use a cartoon version of kim jong-il for their icon?
  3. * 64-bit XP :thumbsup_anim: * HARDWARE firewall - software firewalls are little more than a placebo * not being a complete idiot on the internet * AVG Anti-Spyware - no active protection, i only run it when i think ive been infected. excellent spyware definitions and the best defense against trojans IMHO * Bugoff, courtesy of merijn.org - it closes common security holes that M$ refuses to address * Crap Cleaner - basic level registry cleaner and temp/useless file deleter * Defraggler - for specific (single files, not my enttire hard drive) defragging * HD Tune - for making sure my hard drive(s) havent gone bad * HWMonitor - checking HDD, CPU and GPU temps * Internet - just a link to internet connections (i removed the taskbar and start menu from windows, so this link is kind of a necessity) * IP Config - 3rd party alternative to commandline IP config tool, which is supposed to be some kind of security risk * Jk Defrag (64-bit version) - the best damn defragger out there, period. its a single file, its free, fast as hell, and doesnt ruin my hard drives like diskeeper did. * NOD32 - portable "thinstall" version. active protection is completely turned OFF, but as far as virus scanning goes i wouldnt trust my computer to any other anti-virus app * Paranoia - a shortcut i made that runs crap cleaner and mru-blaster silently and in the background. basically a one-click solution to erasing internet history * PeerGuardian - ...duh. * Pserv - a program that i feel is a lot more informative and easier to use than "services.msc". easily enable/disable/stop/restart windows services * Recuva - for those wonderful little times i right click "delete" when i meant to click "rename" * Reg Organizer - one of the few payware programs i use. this is the most extensive registry cleaner ive ever come across, that also doesnt mess anything up * RegShot - take snapshots of your registry. i use it before and after every program i install, and compare the 2 files. great tool for deleting old reg entries left after uninstalling software * Rogue Remover - the best solution for hard-to-remove "rogue" spyware. the pro version adds an IP list to your hosts file to prevent you from accidentally going to a site that hosts rogue software * Spybot S&D - okay as a base-level spyware scanner, but i like it primarily for the IP's it adds to the hosts file and the internet explorer protection * Spyware Terminator - rivals AVG AntiSpyware in terms of spyware protection. its free and scans extremely fast (i think b/c its definitions are partially based on heuristics). i figured that this along with AVG AntiSpyware would give me close to bulletproof spyware detection * Spyware Blaster - doesnt run any background processes or services. adds a BIG list of sites to the "restricted sites" zone, as well as hosts protection, activex protection, and cookie restrictions. one of the best apps you can install to protect you from teh internets * Startup CPL - sometimes removing spyware is as simple as deleting a reg startup entry. otherwise its useful for mamaging what programs run at startup * StartupList - another program from merijn.org, i really couldnt say enough to explain what this program does. its basically msconfig on steroids...youll be amazed at what this program finds *WinDirStat - graphical display, by size and location, of all the files on your hard drive.useful if youre running low on hard drive space and dont know what to delete under normal circumstances, i dont have any security-related programs running. all these programs are either free, the best in their field, or require a little bit of expertise to use properly. my computer runs like clockwork and i havent had a single malware infection in over 2 years. oh, and i hate the intrusiveness of most modern security programs...so i keep shortcuts to all these programs tucked away in a single folder that stays the hell out of my way until i need it :icon_cool:
  4. and it has 64-bit support. so FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, WILL SOME AMAZING PERSON PLEASE CREATE AN XP X64 RESOURCE PATCHER?!?!?!
  5. what i meant was that i have not and will never use MSN. i use AIM, XMPP (jabber), and IRC. idea: someone should start a IRC channel for wincert!
  6. tisk tisk Rick...if this were a linux forum, youd start a war about "how insecure it is to run under admin/root" but seriously, whats with all the black and white and washed-out looking desktops? the first screenshot that gives me a seizure from all the colors should win.
  7. from what i have read/understand, software RAID is the process of splitting a single HDD into several partitions. its supposed to yield a significant performance boost (not as much as a legit hardware RAID), and of course provide a bit of data redundancy. Normally it can only be done on Windows Server, but awhile back I saw a post on RyanVM's site about patching a few files to get it working on XP. one of my friends, who uses a Mac, says all Macs use a RAID setup by default...?
  8. the title says it all...ive been thinking of doing a software RAID setup on my laptop, but havent ever really messed around with RAID and havent seen a good, concise guide on how to do so. could someone point me in the right direction? if it helps, im interested in RAID 0 (striping), not mirroring...mostly to see how significant the performance boost is.
  9. why do i get the feeling that im the only minimalist on wincert? 2.20 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Processor (T7500) 4 GB RAM @ 667 MHz nVidia GeForce 8600M GT 1920x1080 200GB HDD @ 7200 RPM BUT! GUI enhancements running: RocketDock...and...umm...thats it and even with Rocketdock (and PeerGuardian ) im using just over 93MB or memory at startup dont get me wrong, the video is very impressive. i just think it would be more impressive to see something simplistic/elegant to the point that it would make a Mac fanboy say "damn, i wish i had a PC"
  10. good god, how much memory does all that stuff take up?? O_o
  11. your best bet would be to find a theme that does this internally. and since youre looking for transparency, youll probably have to use windowblinds and mess with one of their transparent skins. but then again i know very little about making windows themes... or you could just do what i do and remove the taskbar completely O_o
  12. the only 64-bit resource editor i know of is "Restorator 2007". if anyone actually manages to patch the 64-bit version of explorer/shell32/msgina/etc, lemme know.
  13. rick, im gonna ask around some different forums and see if the space screensaver can somehow be fixed. im thinking its missing a .dll somewhere? i have a MCE conversion cd i got from demonoid that has these same files. ill check out the files on there to see if maybe the space screensaver is missing something. as for the da vinci...its working for me, but definitely does not look good. for now i would leave it in, just to be able to say all the MCE extras are included.
  14. woot, free screensavers! the space screensaver doesnt seem to be working...anyone else having any problems with this one? all i did was extract the addon and copy the screensavers to my system folder, so i might have screwed something up.
  15. ill be impressed when i see this accomplished by hooking a .dll directly into the explorer shell. as far as im concerned, anything else is just process bloat.
  16. heres an easier method: 1. download the BMP that Jurgen posted, and set it as your wallpaper 2. download and install TweakUI, then run it. navigate to logon-->settings 3. you should see a bunch of check boxes. place a check in the "wallpaper" box, then click "copy now". apply it and restart your computer 4. change your wallpaper back and youre done. the orb will still appear as the startup wallpaper, until you logon to your account
  17. we got it working, by re-registering qmgr.dll and qmgrprxy.dll. not a big deal, since he wanted windows updates completely shut off after everything worked again. and Tarun, do you know of any other windows components that i could update? having 64-bit xp means i cant update to SP3...and i usually dont see or look for any hotfixes other than the ones released on patch tuesday...
  18. ...found an old article buried on keznews: 1. Click Start, click Run, type Regsvr32 %windir%\system32\qmgr.dll, and then click OK. 2. Click Start, click Run, type regsvr32 %windir%\system32\qmgrprxy.dll, and then click OK. 3. Click Start, click Run, type services.msc, and then click OK. 4. Double-click Background Intelligent Transfer Service. 5. In the General tab, click Start. btw, symantec wasnt installed, and the only thing on event log was a few errors concerning DCOM...no big deal. anyway, thanks for your help again N1K
  19. unfortunately the "downloader" folder wasnt even there...
  20. seems i cant seem to escape from these weird PC problems... so a friend of mine and i were almost done reinstalling windows xp on his laptop. the only things left to do were to get a few drivers so his sound/ethernet/SD card reader would work. we couldnt find the drivers on the manufacturer's website (only because he INSISTED i install 64-bit xp). so i tried MS update. sure enough the drivers were there, but the downloads never started. the Background Intelligent Transfer Service was set to manual, but would not start. this is a clean install of windows we're working with, and theres no reason BITS shouldnt be able to start...all dependencies are running, all necessary dll's registered. so would anyone know how i can forcibly start BITS (even though it has refused so far), or even better, suggest a site that might have the elusive 64-bit xp drivers we are looking for?
  21. wow thanks, i guess i should have checked wikipedia first. has anyone used any of the shell replacements listed in the link above? any opinions on them?
