I have a fairly old Dell PC from 2003. It has a 120GB hard drive, 768MB of RAM and a Pentium 4 2.0Ghz processor. Could I install Windows Vista Home Basic on this computer. I willing to do a Full install so I don't have any software problems. Edit: My computer is currently running Windows XP Pro.

I guess Vista copy isn't really fast as it seems to be. Check the screen shot I took today when I was copying 700 MB's in one file from PC to laptop..

In a rather surprising move, Microsoft has released a 17-page document which outlines, in detail all changes in Vista SP1. Microsoft in the past released bits and pieces of what is expected in a Service Pack but this is the most complete change log released for a Service Pack. Long Zhen highlighted some of the key changes and for those wanting the main of the main changes I bolded the best of the best: [*]Adds support for new UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface) industry standard PC firmware for 64-bit systems with functional parity with legacy BIOS firmware, which allows Windows Vista SP1 to install to GPT format disks, boot and resume from hibernate using UEFI …

  11. I saw this question on several forums and would like to post an answer here if someone will need it. So, let's presume that you have encrypted your hard disk with BitLocker encryption. BitLocker is a feature that comes with Windows Vista Enterprise and Ultimate Editions. For some reason, you need to plug-in your hard disk in other computer and read the data from it. If the other computer is running Windows Vista Ultimate or Windows Vista Enterprise and has a TPM chip, the encrypted hard disk can be unlocked from the BitLocker Control Panel item on the alternate computer. When you unlock the BitLocker-enabled hard disk on the alternate computer, the only authentication ope…

Here is a way to convert Google or any Gadget and use it on your Vista's SideBar. I have tried it successfully with Widgets from widgetbox too. You can transform almost any gadget into one that can live on the Windows Vista sidebar or your Desktop. Download & Install Amnesty Generator. Then, choose a Web gadget you'd like to turn into a Vista gadget, click a few buttons to display the gadget's underlying HTML code. Copy and paste that code into Amnesty Generator, change a few settings, such as the gadget's name or size, if you wish, and tell Amnesty Generator to turn it into a Windows Vista gadget. The gadget will appear in the Windows Vista Gadget Gallery. From there…

With Vista Codec Package installed, you won't need to install any other codec or filter. Many user suggested default settings are implemented. Vista Codec Package does not contain a media player. It does not associates filetypes. With this package installed you will be able to use any media player (limited only by the players capabilities) to play DVD's, movies and video clips of any format. Streaming video (real and quicktime) is supported in web browsers. Visit the homepage to get a 64bitAddon which enables xvid, divx and DVD playback in Vista's MediaCenter. Codecs have always been a pain in the butt. Vista Codec Package takes from the best, all the big name creators, s…

The following 14-page PDF tutorial describes how Vista goes about managing some of the system resources. Managing System Resources http://i.i.com.com/cnwk.1d/i/tr/downloads/...7_chapter_5.pdf Vista is not only a multi-tasking OS but it is also a multi-processing OS (assuming that you have more than a single core). Vista functions with a maximum of 2 CPUs. There is no maximum number of cores. However there has been some discussion that the efficiency of Vista starts to drop off when there are more than 4 cores. Shocked It is hoped that Vista SP1 will fix this inefficiency problem because having 8 cores is quite possible today.

  19. After a week of extensive testing, the CRN Test Center found that users of Windows Vista and Windows XP are equally at risk to viruses and exploits and that overall Vista brings only marginal security advantages over XP. One of Microsoft's big promises with Vista was a more secure operating system. But when stripped to the bare bones and thrown into the wild, wild Web, Vista's security failed to impress Test Center engineers. Vista remains riddled with holes, despite its multilayer security architecture and embedded security tools. Besides providing no improvement in virus protection vs. XP, Vista brings little or no security gains over its predecessor against such threat…

  22. Thanks Nekrosoft for the news on this major update to Windows Vista that should for most of us improve the speed and reliability of Windows Vista significantly! Please note: These fixes break all current methods of bypassing driver singing requirements except the good old F8 during boot (that you have to do every single time you start vista IF you are using Rivatuner, atitool and or Peerguardian on 64bit vista, you will have to use F8 every single time to disable driver signing requirements to use those two programs. x86 version is unaffected. These updates should go official on the next patch Tuesday (in one weeks time). Please read more for the download links and inform…
